Interview with Kee King

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I don't want my answer to sound cliché but when I remember that I have a family that is depending on me, expecting me to do honorable things and succeed at them, it makes me want to continue to do what I think may meet their expectations or seek to try something new. As I get older I realize that I need to focus on that which comes from the core of who I am.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to hang out with my girlfriends or spend time reading.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I choose the books I read by the themes they dwell on and my favorite authors.
What is your writing process?
Presently I look at the journals I have kept over the year and picking my topics from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I remember reading the story of sleeping beauty. The book had such beautiful pictures in it that I would hide it under my pillow and spend hours just looking at the pictures. It was a book the missionaries had given our family before they left due to an impending civil war. The book somehow survived the hurried and several movements of my family during the war and became a treasure for me.
What do you read for pleasure?
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone since I have it everywhere I go. I can access both my Bible and my novels.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
My childhood was in West Africa. Most of my twenties was in North America and then beyond that has been in East Africa. I don't think that there is a writer that does not in some ways reflect how they have been socialized. I believe all these including all the different countries in the different continents I have visited provide a backdrop to the things I have written and will continue to write.
When did you first start writing?
I have been dabbling in writing since I was in high school.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I believes that dreams can be both authentic and deceptive and I wanted to look into my encounters as I try to tease out their authenticity and relevance to my life and the lives of many out there.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Just the idea that my success or failure in this one thing will not be dependent on publishers. And the fact that it is free and I can do it from wherever I am.
