Interview with Kelli Calico

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in an amazing household in British Columbia, we moved a lot, but I learned to accept me for me, and that being yourself was okay. This influenced my writing by finally letting me realize that I can write what's inside me, not just what I think people will want. In my case, that means smutty fiction!
When did you first start writing?
Years ago, but it was just for fun, and just for me. I have heaps of notebooks filled with all sorts of stories, some hot, some not, and that was it. But recently my friends convinced me to come out from my shell and put it all out there, so here I am!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The fun and the freedom. I need to be creative, and being an indie author is a great way for me to express that creativity in a meaningful way. Ideally I'd do it full time, but we'll see if that can happen I guess!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creative expression and storytelling. I'm a huge blerd, and I love creating a world, putting the characters into it, then figuring out how they'd react and interact with things around them. It's amazing and so fulfilling!
Who are your favorite authors?
I have a lot of favourite authors, too many to name easily, but I love N.K. Jemisin, Elizabeth Moon, Ursula K. Le Guin, H.P. Lovecraft (and all the derivitive works by other authors), and a lot of the erotica authors on this page!
Describe your desk
I'm not much of a desk person. I have an amazing old MacBook Pro that pretty much lives on my lap, and I do a lot of work on the sofa or on the recliner. Soemtimes the kitchen table is a bit of of a desk, but not often! Mostly I'm definitely not using a desk!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
It's given me a well supported and open venue to put my stories out to the public! I love tha tI can write the things I want to write, and that there is such a supportive community here.
How do you approach cover design?
I'm very straight forward. I use online tools and sites, and try to create something simple. I'm still working on it, but I'm sure I'll get better!
What are you working on next?
I'm never just working on one thing next. There's always a collection of writing projects that I have going on, mostly because it means that I can take time from one when I get stuck and work on something fresh while I figure out how to progress in the other. It seems a bit counter-intuitive, but it really works for me. Plus it means I can keep a stream of shorter works coming out between bigger projects!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Sheer bloody-mindedness to not let the day get me down!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love spending time at the beach, going to bookstores, reading, all sorts of things! I'm also a huge food blerd, not a foodie, but a food enthusiast. I love trying new recipes and types of food!
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I search genres until I see something that grabs my attention. Then I read the preview, and if I'm still hooked, I download!
What is your writing process?
I am super methodical to start, I lay out the world, character ideas, and general plot points before I even fire up Word. Then I start writing, and let things flow organically, letting the story develop in a way that makes sense for the characters, even if that means tweaking the plot a bit. Afterwards, use online and desktop editing software to clean things up, do a few re-reads and re-writes (as needed), then off it goes!
What do you read for pleasure?
Science fiction, fantasy, erotica, supernatural/urban fantasy, and historical fiction. Lots and lots of loads of fiction. Pretty much just all fiction.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I just upgraded to an amazing 8" tablet, and it is my new best e-reading device friend!
