Interview with Kelly Evans

Describe your desk
My desk is slim, black, sleek and shiny. It has two awesome drawers perfect for keeping clutter at bay.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My love for my family inspires me, but also knowing that birth trauma affects up to a quarter of all women who have had babies - including some of the women that I meet on daily basis. This has to change! Imagine if a quarter of all men undergoing vasectomies experienced trauma - there would be an outcry...
Birthing women need doula support now more than ever, so we need birth professionals who are highly trained and skilled, and who value themselves enough to create a sustainable business.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
At the moment I'm loving Acroyoga, which is a form of yoga which I do with my partner. I also enjoy pin up modelling which in itself is a form of storytelling. The pin up clothes, hair, makeup and props all tell the story in a still image... It's so much fun being glamorous even if it is for only a day.

At home with my family, we love working the vege patch, outdoor meals and board games.
What do you read for pleasure?
I love business books and business is pleasure for me. At the moment i'm reading Hooked: How To Build Habit Forming Products by Nir Eyal. I'm also doing The Pointless Book for laughs.
When did you first start writing?
I remember writing a TV Commercial for a Kelloggs Competition in Primary School. I won a prize. That was the first thing I remember. Since then I have written articles, blog posts, books and training materials.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I thrive on the challenge of taking complex ideas and breaking them down into smaller, more digestible ones. I also LOVE writing fiction (but sadly don't have much time for that now - maybe when my kids are older) :)
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually buy ebooks on friend's recommendations, though my current read is a hardback I got at the airport.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a smartphone and an iPad.. it really depends where I am and whether there are kids around which I use.
How do you do approach cover design?
We love outsourcing! We hire people who's zone of genius is cover design to do it for us!
Why do you teach marketing to birth professionals?
So many women want to do birth work and there is such a high turnover in the industry. Sure some women go and have more children and then come back to it. Others go back to work in their pre-baby career.

Doulas improve outcomes for mothers and babies in so many ways! Yet most women haven't even heard of the word doula. Birth professionals need to become better at marketing, then they can serve more mothers, babies and families.
