Interview with Kenton Forshee

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My sense of responsibility to myself and my mother to whom I am caregiver.
What is your writing process?
As far as environment is concerned, I write best while out in the world, and when that isn’t possible, somewhere there is lots of light. I draw from my experience, thoughts, feelings, and imagination. It’s been said that a writer must write of which he knows. That being said, no one knows everything, yet I’ve discovered that one of the greatest joys of writing is to learn more about myself and the world around me so that I may broaden the worlds I create and dig into the depths of human motivations. That’s a never ending process, and there’s always new and interesting things to learn about people.
How do you approach cover design?
I like to take objects that are meaningful from the story and create them on my computer so that I can incorporate them onto the cover. I like covers that are more simplistic and iconic in design.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up an outsider in East Tennessee. I still live there, and I’m still an outsider. I’ve lived many places, having been the son of a Army father, but primarily in East Tennessee. I’ve had a hard life. There’s no other way to describe it. In my youth I didn’t understand how hard it really was. It just was as it was, and I accepted that’s how things were, but it’s not good for someone to move 51 times in their life. It limits your interpersonal skills and inhibits the establishment of the foundational roots which become something we rely upon as we get older. I was bullied as a child, and it’s hard to thank your bullies because they don’t deserve appreciation or the attention, but my experiences have made me the person I am today, including those of being bullied. I have a heightened sense of justice and a considerable amount of compassion, and this greatly influences my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I was 12 years old, and writing interested me a great deal. I have always been someone who tended to live inside himself, and I knew I had a great many thoughts that I wanted to express. It seemed a natural fit for me to write them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am currently writing on my Jiyū series. The first two books are available, and I’m writing on book three. It all began with a question from an internet group of which I’m a member. “If you had your own planet what would you do differently?” The next thing I knew I was writing a book, and it’s turned into a series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The market is flooded with books and new authors, and publishers control their author’s product to a certain extent, especially new ones. You are made to write what is marketable. I didn’t want to write for a dictator.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creation. I love to create, and writing is, in a sense, world building. You are only limited by your imagination.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don’t measure my creative endeavors on the metric of successes and failures. A writer writes, and Smashwords has allowed me to get my work out into the world, and that allowed me to meet a goal, despite that it was not initially a goal I had in mind, so in that sense Smashwords is a good site and I highly recommend it.
