When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Hiking around Folsom Lake and Northern California. I also enjoy working in the yard, reading history, and collecting vintage and antique mechanical clocks.
What is your writing process?
Usually I'll be gripped by a topic that I need to investigate or research. I might read a story or someone will ask me a question that triggers my curiosity. I then set out to learn about the topic and then present it so that anyone can understand it.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing in earnest because my insurance business was a flop. I hate insurance. I hate selling insurance. I enjoy providing good consumer information on complicated topics. But you can only write about health insurance so much. So I started blogging about my hikes and the history I was seeing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I had blogged and posted about many of the interesting historical sites I came across while hiking across a drought shrunken Folsom Lake. People liked reading about the history I was discovering. But you can only put so much into a blog post. The next logical step was to put the pictures and the background history of the sites into a book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have information people want. But mainstream publishers only want books that conform to a particular formula. Just like I am an independent insurance agent because I want to do business my way, being an independent author seems to be in keeping with my perspective on life. I write for myself first, as opposed to writing for an audience to sell books.
