Interview with Kia Scarlette

What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Writing websites. These writing websites such as Wattpad has allowed readers to sample my books without downloading it and also I can interact with my readers. They leave comments and votes and give me an idea of how my story world has inspired them. It really is a great way for authors to reach younger readers as well.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device is my ipad. I enjoy reading books on this device because I can take it anywhere with me.
Describe your desk
My desk could be messy one moment but clean the next. Sometimes I prefer it clean because it gives me motivation to write but at the same time I prefer it to be messy because it allows me to place my thoughts on paper and allows me to create my fantasy world, something which I hope many will enjoy. The Nefaliem Universe has taken years to create and that was mainly due to a messy desk.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Palmerston, Northern Territory, a small city not too far from Darwin. Here I learnt and grew as any person would and had an active imagination at the time I didn't know what it was all I knew was that I saw vampires, angels, demons and dragons. I had crazy scenes that I would play out in the backyard and would draw pictures of my now defined characters. These small but many imaginative scenes has created the Nefaliem Universe, my novels.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was eighteen. I wrote a bit of Vampieruz but at the time I didn't think it was going to be published, it was going to be a story that I wrote for myself and it was initially called Blood Bath. A strange name but it suited it until I learnt that I could create a different type of vampire then it changed. So for a few good years I have been writing but eighteen was the year I started taking it seriously.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Expressing my thoughts on pages and creating a world that people can immerse themselves in. That is what makes me enjoy all of my writing, sometimes I have difficulty getting away from it. There is nothing more satisfying then knowing that others appreciate your hard work.
What's the best thing about being a writer?
My imagination. I've always had an over-active imagination where sometimes, I'd be sitting in a serious meeting or in class and my mind would wonder into my own world. It's great to know now I can create my imaginary world into something more real.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mainly through smashwords. There are times when I would end upon kobo and would find books on kobo that aren't found on smashwords.
How do you get inspired to write?
When I have a new idea, I aim for these ideas to be something out of the ordinary, something that others haven't seen or been apart of yet. That's the world I aim to create, that in a sense is my inspiration. But when it comes to individual scenes, that's a little more tricky.
How did you come up with the Nefaliem's Universe?
Honestly I have no idea. There I guess like some there were things I liked and things I didn't like and trust me as much as I enjoy reading and watching TV - there are something's that some directors don't do and that's probably pushed the boundaries of my world.
