Interview with Kim Knight

Published 2017-04-15.
When did you first start writing?
I've always loved writing since my school days! Journals, essays , stories anything to do with words has always been my passion. I started in school. I was in my early twenties when I discovered Jackie Collins, I read Deadly Embrace and was hooked instantly on Jackie's stories, I read every book in the Lucky series and more. Then I discovered Martina Cole and promised myself one day I'll write a book. I remember thinking wow what a suspenseful story I wonder if I could create such an exciting experience in a story? As life moved on, I carved out the time as a life changing event happened and writing distracted me , a form of escapism. Now in my mid thirties it's all I want to do. It took me a good ten years to knuckle down, and put down all my ideas on paper, but I've arrived... finally.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I'm about to release a series of modern, steamy romance novellas. It's my Romance Set In Paradise series. The first book Havana Heat is released on the 12th May, and will go on pre-sale anytime now! The second book Lover's Retreat will follow a few weeks after. The story behind the four books (could be more), is the simple fact I had so many short story ideas and wanted to put them into a series, the problem was there was no common theme. I decided to set them all in some of the most exotic places in the world to add a little spice! Hence Romance Set in Paradise.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I started out as a traditionally published author, I decided to jump into self- publishing for a number of reasons! Too many to explain here if you really want to know, read my blog post on it on my author site.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Oh wow! Smashwords is an amazing place to publish, the amount of exposure you can have via other platforms is really something. Personally as a new author I feel it has helped with exposure which is what you need to start out with.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating the story, once I have an idea the most enjoyable part for me is building the characters, bringing them alive so they really pop on paper. Next for me it's creating the suspense. As a romantic suspense author I love this genre with a passion! I enjoy taking readers on an enjoyable journey, before we reach the HEA. For me as a writer a lot of the enjoyment comes from the creation.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. I enjoy writing so much and that's why I do it more than anything, but to know that others enjoy what you have created and want more is very motivational.
What are you working on next?
Once I have published my Romance Set in Paradise series in May, I have an unfinished romantic suspense novel calling me! It's been calling me for about two years. I want to create a good story so I keep resting it, and then going back to it. I also have another romance series idea lingering also.
Who are your favorite authors?
Martina Cole, Jackie Collins, Chimanda Nogozi Adechi, Khalidi Hosseni, Jo Jo Moyes, Jodie Picolt, Diane Chamerblaine, the list really is endless!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My three year old son. My heartbeat, he's beautiful.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Reading, watching make up and beauty on You Tube, at my sewing machine making clothes....
What is your writing process?
I'm a planner I plan out my plot, character's and their fate and drama. I also think a lot about what they are like as people. Then I briefly plot the story out in chapters... then write like no one is looking and crack on!
How do you approach cover design?
I try to keep it relevant to the title and story. I like bold eye catching covers. I'm not a fan of covers that took too dated as my writing is pretty modern.
What do you read for pleasure?
Romance, crime, thriller, African American and historical fiction. Love it all!
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I'm a paperback girl if I'm honest. But I normally read on my tablet if I read an e-book.
Describe your desk
Tidy, a vase of flowers, note pads, pens, radio and a pile of unpaid bills. LOL
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm from London. Yes this influences my writing a lot I use London as a setting, as well as other places.
