Interview with Vincent King

Published 2018-05-14.
What age did you start writing and why?
I began writing Freebird around the age of 10 or 11. It was one of those long nights where my brother had his martial arts class and so we were sitting at local Boys & Girls Club where we growing up, I was just sitting there with a pencil and paper. After 20 minutes of thinking in my head of something interesting; I let my creativity run wild.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in two cities. I was born and raised in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Later in my life I moved to Montevallo, Alabama and lived there until this last year. Both of those cities have life and culture to them! I can remember being a kid and mom taking us to see parades every year so we would go the same Burger King to get breakfast in Roanoke Rapids. Montevallo is actually a beautiful city plus since its home to Montevallo University, it always some great events going on to be apart of.
Who has been your biggest supporter in your writing career?
I don't mean to sound any bit cliche here but my mother. Not that any of my other family member's didn't care but when I had ideas, problems or even needed finance help when it came to the books; she came in for the win.
Describe your desk
My desk? Well currently It has a pirate ship in one corner then a picture of my girlfriend and I in another corner. Under the laptop is a Sword Art Online card gaming mat and a old mouse pad. My girlfriend and I are always swapping our laptops from who gets to use the desk. Luckily I mounted a charger hanger right on the wall!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Honestly, money and Reddit. I began writing again at the end of 2017. I decided at the time; I needed to hit the books hard because I had taken too much time away from them after completely The Demon Hunter. So first thing I did was ask Reddit how someone would start in writing; about two months later I was getting the book published. I never realized how actually hard it is to acknowledged by a Traditional Publisher until Reddit hit with a slap of reality so I decided to self-publish and maybe one day someone at a publishing company would see these stories. Now granted, I still write query letter's every now and then.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Book signing! I attended my first book signing at 2018's Alabama Medieval Fantasy Festival. I was along side Danielle Raver who was teaching the in and outs of doing live speaking and book signing in general. I ended the weekend by selling out of all my [The Demon Hunter] copies. It was quite a great weekend in both of writing careers, I don't think I ever had that much attention for my stories.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
By letting sell my books for free! It's honestly what appealed to me when Danielle was describing to me how Smashwords works. The fact I have way more control of my books, prices and distribution compared to other sites. At some point in time, I will be moving all my E-Books to this site. Did I mention the customer service here is great?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Well that typically comes down to lists of things. One of them is when a story just "clicks" together in my head, I can't tell you how many times I have told my girlfriend things like; "You are gonna love this [The Arise] story honey, so and so is going to be crazy awesome" or even "My book is soooo good, I can't wait until I finish it". Another is when people actually like my stories and talk about it, it's like I finally have someone I can talk to about that certain character or event.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Well the story behind [Freebird: The Service] is that when I originally started Freebird 2; I had a plan to include a spot for a secret service agent to be with the president during the time of the attack. When I actually got into writing the book, I never once found the right time for Ethan to have a spotlight. So skip later down to the road when I did the Book Signing with Danielle; her and I were discussing E-books and their success. After some thought when I got home, I decided to write a short story which was focusing on Ethan's point of view during Freebird 2. It finally just fell into place and I decided his story should be just a free short story that would greatly bring together Freebird and Freebird 2 better then I originally planned.
What are you working on next?
Currently I am working on Freebird 3. I can't say anything too detail about it because even one simple comment will ruin Freebird 2 for fans. Freebird 3 will be the finale of the series, I will be sad when it comes to an end but this certain story is going to bring everything to a full circle in such a great way; including certain characters returning from the earlier books.
Who are your favorite authors?
Well I can list that for you;

Michelle Paver
Rick Riordan
Joe R Lansdale
Brian Litfin
It's no secret that Danielle M Raver has recently become a role model to me so it's only right I list her.
