Interview with Samantha Cook

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've been making stories all my life rather than focusing on school work or jobs. There was no starting point to this, it's something I've known I've wanted to do for as long as I can remember.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Murder, love, trauma, heartache, all those juicy things.

My first novel is a murder story with elements of romance, psychological trauma, and lots of moral gray areas. There is a constant question mark attached to every right-or-wrong situation. Wouldn't be fun otherwise.
When did you first start writing?
I can't remember. Seriously, I've been writing and drawing for as long as I can remember. Whenever I'd have an idea that took too long to draw, it came out in a written story or fanfiction. It was only until very recently that I learned of the magic that is a computer tablet, or online publishing. Beforehand I thought comics or published novels were only possible on paper.

In short, I've been making stories my entire life. It's my favorite thing to do.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
I've hardly read five books.

But really I'd have to go with all of the Harry Potter books and the Stephen King one I'm working on, called Doctor Sleep.

Original right?
What do you read for pleasure?
Harry Potter or manga.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
All over east Tennessee.

I've lived in more places than I ever cared to count, and I have a variety of stories attached to all of them. It's helped me gain a unique perspective on certain environments and certain people. I've lived everywhere from hickville to the downtown slums. Thankfully I don't live in either of those places anymore, but it was interesting while it lasted.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Oh yes.

It's the easiest way I've found to get my stories out there and possibly make money in the process.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. What would be the point in writing without a rapt audience?

Now I just need to build one.
What are you working on next?
A sequel to my murder/thriller novel.

The book is not yet on smashwords, but I will make it available as soon as I'm ready.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My fiance.

Without his love and encouragement, I'm not sure I'd care enough to try as much as I do. Plus he's insistent on looking after me while I pursue my dream, and that's something I can never hope to repay no matter how much I try. He's as creative as I am, probably more so. He's what makes me better.
