Interview with Kathy Rae

What are you working on next?
The Jewel of Hope is the first installment of a trilogy. I am now working on its sequel. And I have started a new series called "The Barber Chair Series". The first book will be, "Deprogramming A Bully." The second book will be, "The Ultimate Calling Video Game." I am also starting the next Children's Illustrated book about a Moose.
Who are your favorite authors?
Frank Peretti and Joel Rosenberg.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I am one of those people who has so many talents that I have a list a mile long awaiting me. If I lived to be 200, I doubt I would do everything I want to do. So, an eagerness to create something new propels me out of bed. If I am creating, I am happy!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend time with the Lord through bible study and fellowship, sing, make videos, landscape, garden, re-model, pray, educate myself on how to be a better author are just a few.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I am a member of BookDaily.com and there are many twitter book clubs like The Bookshelf Cafe, My New Book, BookBear, Book Buzz, Christian Fiction and more.
What is your writing process?
So far I seem to write out of total inspiration. If I see something or hear something that starts my mind gathering information, a story follows. "The Jewel of Hope," was created when I took a trip to Fountain Hills, Arizona. The statues and structures there fit together like a beautiful puzzle. By the time I left there, I had the overall book in my mind.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I didn't read a lot until I discovered I have a slight case of Dyslexia. Frank Peretti's, "This Present Darkness" was probably the first book I read after straightening out the problem of flying letter on the page. That probably is the engine that turned "The Jewel of Hope" into a spiritual warfare book.
How do you approach cover design?
I went to 99designs and entered a contest for my cover. Apriliy21 was the winner. As time as progressed I have started to make my own covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
Christian fiction, any genre.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in a small farming community in Washington state, located between Moses Lake and Grand Coulee Dam. Even though I struggled with reading, I have always loved writing. I was shy and I found that writing was an avenue of self-expression. Growing up on the farm was a great place to explore and foster imagination.
When did you first start writing?
Fifth grade.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I took "The Bestseller Blueprint" course by Steve Harrison and Jack Canfield. They gave me the tools to understand how to publish on my own.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating a world that you can change with just a few happy pecks on the computer. Then living in that world as it comes alive with each word that is typed.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I wrote Ducky Day or Yucky Day twenty-five years ago on a recipe card for a friend whose nine-year-old boy was having a problem with his attitude. She just moved and found the recipe card and asked me if I remembered it. I sat down one day and expanded the story to "Ducky Day or Yucky Day ~ You Choose."
What do your fans mean to you?
To hear the excitement in their voice and to have them talk about a world you created, brings indescibable joy. They are great tools for improvement, with their comments.
