Interview with Kristy McCaffrey

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I enjoy immersing myself into a story.
What do your fans mean to you?
They're so very important. Their enthusiasm has kept me going.
What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on Book 4 in my Wings of the West series, The Blackbird.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Dr. Clarissa Pinkola Estes and her 'Women Who Run With The Wolves' tome. For romance, I'm a fan of Julie Garwood and Elizabeth Lowell.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm not much of a morning person, but I do enjoy a cup of tea while scrolling through email and Facebook. Then I jump into whatever project I'm currently working on.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read, and watch tv and movies. My husband and I lead a fairly quiet life geared around our kids and dogs. We love to travel, frequently out of the country.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Mostly word-of-mouth, amongst my romance author friends. I'm also in a book club on Facebook for Women's Adventure magazine. I've read some amazing adventure tales thanks to them.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The one I'm rather fond of was a fan fiction short story in Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern universe. It was called 'Mooth and Marla', about a girl and her blue dragon. It was published in a fanzine when I was in high school. (Unfortunately, I'm no relation to Anne McCaffrey although I would love to be.)
What is your writing process?
It's a mishmash of plotting and flying-by-the-seat-of-my-pants. I do a lot of visualizing, playing the story out in my mind like a movie. On the whole, I'm a fairly slow writer, but eventually I get to the end.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I really loved Nancy Drew books as a young girl. I just thought she was so put-together. I wanted to have her confidence.
How do you approach cover design?
I really like covers that evoke some essence of the story. I hope my books convey that.
