Interview with L.C. Bravim

What are your five favorite books, and why?
My favorite books make me think and feel differently than I did before. Among the finest at this are Robert Caro's 'Years of Lyndon Johnson,' Jack London's 'White Fang,' as well as anything by Lois Lowry or C.S. Lewis.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
The Kindle 3G is head and shoulders above other dedicated e-readers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read anything and everything. Newspapers, magazines, novels, biography, narrative nonfiction, mythology, etc. The most pleasurable reads are always those that surprise me.
Describe your desk
I prefer standing desks. My thoughts run more clearly while upright.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York and Florida. Setting is very important to any novel. It influenced my writing in a very obvious way. I borrowed features of South Florida to suit various plotlines in Purple has an Afterglow.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was four. 'A,' 'B,' 'C,...'
What's the story behind your latest book?
The story came to me in a dream. Punk rock was a driving influence.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was living abroad and had evenings and weekends free. With time to kill, I decided to jot down notes for a story. The rest is history.
How do you approach cover design?
With someone who knows what they're doing. Cover design is for serious artists. These people have creative vision coupled with technical skill. A great cover captures the mood of the book without giving away too much.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords introduced me to the concept of indie authors and indie publishing. The success of Nicky Charles, author of the brilliantly original Lycan trilogy, motivated me a great deal. She is a phenomenal talent and paved the way for a lot of us.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Flow.
What do your fans mean to you?
Anyone who takes the time to read my book (and lets me know it) will get a personal response. Love it or hate it, I value your time and feedback.
What are you working on next?
The story of John and Amy is not finished. These characters will pop up again in future books.
Who are your favorite authors?
Robert Caro, Jack London, Lois Lowry, C.S. Lewis, Nicky Charles, Jean M. Auel...too many to list.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The sun gets awfully bright. Get me a cave in the woods and I'll sleep the morning away.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have a day job. That consumes the vast majority of my time. It's my good fortune to be passionate about two completely different things.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I troll best-seller lists or look for other writers/reviews that I respect for recommendations.
What is your writing process?
It's insanity. I write during lunch. Early mornings before work. Bedtime. Weekends. Holidays. In traffic. Airports.
