Interview with Lisa Dawn

What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my Samsung galaxy tablet as well as my Samsung phone. Lately I have been using my phone more to read books from.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy for me is creating a place that is my own and getting lost in my story and connecting with my characters. Writing is my happy place and my therapy, and snaps me out of a bad mood. I can't even describe the excitement that flows through me when I start to write.
What are you working on next?
I am working on book #2 to my Lexi Reed series called By the light of the moon as well as a paranormal romance story. Both I hope to have finished and published by the end of October.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I ever read that impacted me was Pet Semetary by Stephen King. I was 9 or 10 years old and fell in love with his story telling. That is when I decided that when I grew up I was going to be a writer. I never gave up on my dream.
How do you approach cover design?
My cover design has to go with the theme of the book. It took me a while to find the cover for A tale of two witches. I do not start looking for my covers until I am in the middle part of the book I am writing. I need to get a feel for my characters and the drama that is unfolding so I can choose the best cover for the book.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
My daughter asked me one day why I didn't write anymore and I couldn't give her an answer. There is no reason why I should have let life interfere with my writing. She asked me to write a book that she could read (she is 9) and told me what my book should include. So to answer your question about what motivated me, my daughter did. She gave me the courage and support to follow my dream.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing, I am working at my day job and taking care of my family.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I follow a lot of authors on twitter and when I see a book they wrote that sparks my interest I download it. I don't rely on the ratings they get if it seems interesting I will read it.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read a variety of genres. I love anything horror, thrillers, romance, paranormal stories, and fantasy.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not in its entirety. I remember sitting at my step-dads Franklin computer (does that tell you how old I am lol) and writing a fantasy type story that had knights, a kingdom and fire breathing dragons. As I recall it was pretty good and I wish I still had that floppy disk so I can show my daughter what I wrote when I was around her age.
What is your writing process?
I write my first draft in a notebook. I know that sounds old school but with my day job, and then sitting in the car line to pick my daughter up from school, bringing a laptop with me is not always feasible. I can take my notebook anywhere and write the majority of my book waiting in the car line. However, I do have a notepad program on my phone that I use if an idea comes to me while I am driving or something like that so I do not forget. When I finish my first draft I start typing it out on my laptop and then I can edit along the way. What I want my story to be like and what I want my characters to do starts flowing on the first page that I write. I love being surprised by what happens next.
