Interview with Dion Lack

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am also a filmmaker so when I am not writing I am usually creating new video content and editing. When I am not in work mode you can find me spending time with my daughters.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was in 6th grade, I wrote a 4 part comic book called "Laughter Brothers". It was about me and four of my friends who all possessed the power to make people laugh.
What is your writing process?
Once an idea hits me, I write the inner and outer goal of the main character. From there I create an outline of all the major action (middle, beginning, end). In the outline I start to create how to get from point A to point B. Once that has been determined, I start writing the dialog---no action. Finally I go back and write in the narrative. My process includes lots of index cards, different color codes (indicating dialog). Its like putting together a puzzle.
How do you approach cover design?
The entire cover design process is a very collaborative on. I have an artist background so I find that this experience helps me to successfully communicate my vision First I have to envision an image that can encompass the entire story of the book and then sketch what it looks like. Next, I go though different artist portfolios to see what styles best capture the imagery that I am going for. Once I select the artist, I share with them the sketch I created and the overall feel that I am going for. From there the artist delivers their iteration of the cover.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Social media. I don't have a large budget so I take advantage of platforms such as Instagram, FaceBook and Twitter. Luckily as a filmmaker I have equipment to make high quality videos that I can share across these networks. Also I find that it helps me to connect with other authors who offer advise and share my work as well.
Describe your desk
A desk chair and my bed complete with my laptop and a tall jug of coffee. Not ergonomically aligned at all but the best way for me to layout all my notes and comfortably work.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Dayton, Ohio where I spent most of my days outside playing with friends. We often created our own games which included being superheros from our favorite Saturday morning cartoons and often times making up new characters to fit our fantasy world. In many ways those games helped influence my creative mind.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing as a kid. Not in a traditional sense but through pictures I would draw. These would turn into a series of images that told a sequential story, much like comic books. I've been a story teller since the 3rd grade.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I believe wholeheartedly despite what the world says everyone of us carries a power inside of us. That very idea is the inspiration behind this latest book series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
In order to start your business you have to gain an appreciation of what it takes to create your work. I wanted to understand the process of publishing, distribution and marketing before moving forward and getting representation with a traditional publishing company.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm new to Smashwords but I am excited to see the outcome of using this platform. Smashwords offers so much for indie authors from the step by step style book to wide distribution and marketing opportunities.
