Interview with Rein Johnson

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in San Francisco, California, and I wouldn't trade that fir anything. I believe being in such an eclectic and diverse environment has allowed me to experience life from a variety of different spiritual and natural perspectives. San Francisco is a blended culture all its own and living there alone tells some phenomenal stories. I didn't have the life I desired given so much sexual abuse and bullying growing up, but there is even a story in that. My writing is influenced by a variety of experiences that has shaped the woman I have become today. I am blessed and grateful.
When did you first start writing?
I can't remember not writing. I learned to read at 3 years old. Once I could sound out letters, words just made sense to me. I read everything from street signs to billboards to Anna Karenina in early elementary school. I was always lost in a story even when a book wasn't in my hand. Being so abused, I found myself always escaping to another world way off in my imaginary distance. That soon translated to poems, essays, plays, and autobiographies. Even my diaries were written for the reader. I lived narration for as long as I can remember, and writing my heart out was profoundly easy. I am not surprised that I continue to do so even now. Writing; story telling, are blessed and inspired gifts. To have writing as a part of my vocation is an amazing gift from the Creator that I will never cease to enjoy or be grateful for. In writing, I get to become undone and exposed so that someone else can experience something magical and enlightening, and I don't take it for granted.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Overall, seeing something new birth. My head is so full of ideas all of the time. Like most authors, I find inspiration in so many places and on so many topics. My greatest joy is the completion of a project and watching it change lives. My ultimate life's purpose is to impact the lives of others with information that will transform them. When that happens, I know the sleepless nights and the entire journey has to been in vain. Writing is such spiritual experience. It's literally like labor and delivery for me. To see my "babies" in the hands of others having these epiphanies and "aha" moments makes it all worth the journey.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I have always been pretty independent and I believe in maintaining the authenticity of what is birthed out of the soul. That is not to say I would never sign or accept a contract, right now, I just enjoy the magic of speaking from my soul and telling the authentic story from my heart. I didn't wake up and decide to be an indie author. The words have always spilled out of my soul and, well, here I am.
What's the story behind your latest book?
When I wrote “Rules of Engagement: Preparing for a Kingdom Marriage,” I wrote it because there are many who share my story to some degree. I wrote it largely for women who feel desperate, alone, and who are quite honestly tired of being told to “hold on” without any strategy behind it. We are often told to trust, but we often have no idea what to trust for beyond the hope of love. We deal with loneliness, we deal with isolation, we struggle with masturbation, and no one is telling “our” story. No one is speaking to that emptiness that we are so desperately trying to fight.

I asked God to prove His love for me—to prove that His way worked. I had tried in so many ways to do it on my own, and I failed miserably. At my lowest place sitting on the floor in my bathroom weeping, God met me there and placed me on a transformation path that would change my life, reset and launch my ministry, and prepare me for walking a journey that would lead me toward, not just any marriage, but a Kingdom one—a divinely chosen, structured, and driven one, and I a sharing that information in “Rules” for those that are as tired as I found myself, and for those that just want the information.

It is not true that God does not want to be or does not care for this part of our lives. He absolutely cares, and more than that, He has a plan for it. “Rules” provides information that takes the mystery out of what God means when we hear “wait.” It travels the process boundaries and walks through transformation and biblical evidence that proves God does have a divine plan and all we need do is access it. “Rules” does not make a case against dating, it makes a case for God’s desires for us. I want you to know and embrace that plan. I want you to have peace in the process, and I want you to be divinely introduced to your Kingdom mate. Join me in the discussion and watch God change your life!
What do your fans mean to you?
Well, first, I don't use the word "fans." I am not a celebrity or anything. I was chosen to birth words, and I maintain that organic spirituality about it, but I consider my readers friends in the exchange of transformative information, and my friends along the journey mean the world to me. The fact that someone would take the time to read anything that I write or listen to a song that I recorded is a incomparable gift to me. To know that anyone, whether just one or thousands, are paying attention pushes me to my greatest heights, and I write with the understanding that their time is valuable and I never want to let them down. I thank God for giving me reader friends in this who value my voice and I value them in return. Every purchase, every signing, every comment about my works lifts me higher, good, bad, or indifferent. The readers inspire me to grow and learn on a continual basis.
Who are your favorite authors?
Boy do I have many! Off the top, Toni Morrison, Langston Hughes, Zora Neal Hurston, Alice Walker, Joyce Meyer, Charlotte Bronte, Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, J.K. Rowling (her thought process is amazing), J.R.R. Tolkien, William Golding, C.S. Lewis, Maya Angelou, and the list goes way on along with many spiritual writers who have influenced my life.
Describe your desk
There is a thing called a desk? Who knew? I am a true eccentric person. I write when inspiration hits. Most often I do so at my dining room table, but have laptop, will travel! The world is my desk whether sprawled out on the floor, writing in bed in the wee hours of the morning, or sitting under a tree or at the lake, I always look for ways to spark my inspiration and creativity. My "desk" travels, and so does my Chai Latte.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
There is so much life to live and so much inspiration waiting for us to notice it. I would be a fool to miss out on what Heaven shows me daily. It's a privilege to live.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design can genuinely make or break a book. For me, it is important to remain reflective and intuitive as I believe the cover art and content must tell the same story while maintaining commercial appeal. Most of my book covers have a prominent symbol that speaks to the context of the book but remains eye catching. Being a book lover and avid reader, I often think about how I shop for new books, and I ask myself if I would be drawn to the book if it were on display at a bookstore. I also ask myself if it speaks to me, do I resonate with it? Creating a cover doesn't have to be a daunting task. At the end of the day, when you are passionate about what you do, you will speak from your heart, and others will be drawn to that.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
For me, it has largely been word of mouth. I am an international speaker, so when I go places, I am more prone to sell books at my display. That personal connection that readers have with an author is so important. When my readers can reach out and touch me, as well as hear me tell these stories first hand, it creates a synergy and bond that is fantastic. Beyond speaking engagements, I have found that utilizing my email and other social media networks has been a blessing.
What are you working on next?
I have so many ideas always floating around in my head. For the last 3 years I have been working on a transformation package that is finally done, and I am currently releasing my "preparing for a Kingdom marriage" series of books. I think after that I would like to write novels-- largely Christian fiction -- telling the stories of women like me dealing with the issues that we all deal with while trying to maintain our faith. I don't think it will include erotica, but I am most inspired by stories like "The Bluest Eye," and "Jonah's Gourd Vine." Those are books along with many others that inspired me to tell my own story. Now, I would like to build on that from a fictional perspective. I have always been drawn to characters and their backstories from video games to books and plays, so I am looking to build on that and perhaps even turn some of these into stage plays. Whatever is next for me knows no boundaries. I believe I have so much in me to give. I will not die with unreleased potential.
