Interview with Robert L. Beck

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Montreal, Canada and I am Canadian by birth. That is why I made my protagonist Canadian as well.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing three years ago as a way of combating the boredom of my job, and my life in general.
What's the story behind your latest book?
A fatherless Canadian high school boy, Lance Rock, has been raised and trained by the United States government’s former top operative. For his senior year, Lance decides to travel to California in the hope of finding a girlfriend as well as freedom from his regimented life. Once there, he inadvertently ends up in the home of a mother and her two teenage daughters. He is forced to use his skills to defend them and himself from the woman’s ex-husband—a crime lord who has been terrorizing the family for over a decade!
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was basically the continual rejections of my novel by literary agents that convinced me to self-publish.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I couldn't have published my book without Smashwords. I am totally and completely grateful toward them for allowing me to have done that!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The creativity aspect. To be able to create characters, place them in intriguing situations, and have them interact with one another is so cool.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything! I so love my fans and I hope my sequel meets their expectations.
What are you working on next?
The sequel to Dawn of the Knight. I had always envisioned my protagonist, Lance Rock, to be in a series of adventures.
Who are your favorite authors?
John Norman, Harry Harrison, H. Rider Haggard, and Daniel Defoe.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. He is my "raison d'etre!"
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Researching, playing video games, listening to music, or watching the occasional movie.
What is your writing process?
I have a very vivid imagination. I can imagine whole scenes, dialog, and situations. Once I get a scene/dialog in my mind, I'm able to transpose it to the page.
How do you approach cover design?
I used a company called EBook Launch. I described the story, the main characters, and also supplied some suggestive pictures. They designed a cover that I was very pleased with.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Honestly, it's been word of mouth. I feel that if you write a great story, write a great blurb, and have a nice book cover, the story will sell itself, (albeit slow and steady), over time.
