Interview with David X Reiver
Published 2018-07-02.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I don't know yet, Smashwords, that's incredibly presumptuous question for you to ask.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Somewhere between ending a first draft and the dawning realization that you have hours of editing ahead of you, there's a brief moment of contentment for having created something. I'm sure there's a great joy attached to having a growing fan base, but I have no idea about that yet. Really, I'm questioning why you'd interview me before I've sold a single book.
What do your fans mean to you?
She means the world to me, and I'm glad I have a fan. Sometimes I buy her coffee.
What are you working on next?
More world adventures for Lancelot Graves and also a detective novel based in 2065.
Who are your favorite authors?
DFW, Pynchon, Heller, hooks, Robbins, Burroughs, the typical aging white dude list.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The alternative.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to watch video essays, cycle, and plan travel itineraries.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I type apparent non-sequitur phrases into the search bar and if something shows up, I read it.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Not the first, but the longest one I remember writing was about a planet inhabited by sentient peanuts. The monsters were peanut butter. I really liked peanuts growing up.
What is your writing process?
I plot out the first draft, write it in a notepad, edit while rewriting into the computer, then work on something else, and return for two more rewrites once something else is through the first draft.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Little Dracula's Christmas, probably? Maybe a children's version of Frankenstein? Either way, I wanted to read more as a result.
