Interview with Laura Baumbach

How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Word of mouth mainly. Since I work within the romance community and most of my best friends are bestselling authors, I have a terrific array of expert opinions on what is a great book out there. I usually listen to friends who have similar tastes in story lines as I do.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. It was a fan fiction piece in The Sentinel world. It grew into a large series called The Father Figure. I think I wrote 39 stories in that universe.
What is your writing process?
Eclectic. I usually get inspired by one small thing and the story just erupts from that central scene. Sometimes its the opening scene, sometimes it's in the middle or end of a story. I never know until I start writing it down. It evolves as I write.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to include elements of the story, something symbolic to let readers know what they might expect. I also like it uncluttered and crisp, but that isn't always easy once artwork adds in text and font elements.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Anything by Alistair Maclean or Agatha Christie. I love mysteries. Add in romance and I'm hooked.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I prefer my computer. My wrist hurts if I hold my ipad too long.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Word of mouth is most effective for me. I also use ads on romance sites, magazines and flyers.
Describe your desk
Its a large desk, old wooden office from Eastman Kodak. It's huge with deep drawers and lots of top space that holds a 24 inch monitor, my laptop, printer, a second laptop, a never-ending stack of papers and my work schedule, next to a never-ending cup of coffee. I spend a lot of time at my desk, not all of it on the computer but a lot of it.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Pennsylvania with five brothers and sisters. I learned to cook, bake, clean, do laundry, can, sew, crochet, shoot a gun and take care of my great-grandmother by the time I was 9. Its all come in handy throughout my life. I'm surprised at how many of my peers don't know how to do some of those ordinary things.
When did you first start writing?
I was 43. We had just adopted our second son and I needed something to do while I was home with him. He was 1 yrs. old. Writing took the place of adult companionship while my husband was at work.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Writing m/m erotic romance for 19 years has had its challenges. Having to make it on my own was the only way I could get published when I started out.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
They reach a broader audience than I can on my own. They reach libraries, online readers, and a number of outside distribution channels all at once. Its a godsend to a busy writer.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
When a reader contacts me and lets me know something I wrote touched them or their lives. That is the best for me.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. Without readers, an author is mute.
What are you working on next?
Sequel to Resse Holt:The Dark Side. It's the second in the series. The title isn't firm yet, the main characters will be returning, in love and in danger, as always!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I'm a registered nurse. I work a medical unit in a secure facility.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
A Winkle in Time. I never stopped reading after that book. I was around 8.
What do you read for pleasure?
Mysteries, mysteries and more mysteries.
