Interview with Laurel Black

Published 2018-05-08.
What do you read for pleasure?
Health and self-improvement books, though mostly paranormal romance and Gothic horror.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My computer, though I do enjoy reading on my phone too sometimes.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
Paid book promotions, especially with sites like fiverr and Book Doggy.
Describe your desk
Empty. I work on my bed.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in North Texas. Although it isn't as racist as it used to be, there was still a lot of prejudice against people who are minorities and disabled. People get talking about the good old days and how dark things have become. I came to know this as the Southern Gothic genre, where everyone was just looking to get away from it all. Soon, I became enchanted with the Gothic genre in general, and because I loved fairy tales even back then, I started writing to where I am now.
When did you first start writing?
Around five, when my teacher forced me to write a story about going on vacation.
What's the story behind your latest book?
It's about a reaper who is forced to help the ghost of his lover cross over to the other side. You can actually find it here:

What motivated you to become an indie author?
I guess I didn't like not being able to oversee my work. It felt like they were sort of shutting me out. Plus, I was always overly independent when it came to my stories, so it worked out.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm just starting off on it, but I hope to promote some horror books here. A bit of romance too, though with a gruesome side to it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Getting to write down my feelings and indulge in my former teenage self's imagination.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love the support they give me, and I hope I can give back to them as much as I (financially) can.

This place was peaceful, dreamlike even. It was like something out of those fairytales my parents used to read to me. The refreshing country air, the verdant hills, with an ocean nearby, I couldn’t help but feel at ease. Even if I did have the choice to wake up elsewhere, I didn’t want to. It was obvious. And yet, a part of me me I couldn’t, no matter how sweet my dreams were.
