Interview with Lee Willard

Published 2021-12-27.
When did you first start writing?
When I was about 6 years old. Those stories were too much like the television of the time but set on a different planet, so none of them survive. Parts of 'The Aldeb Wars' date from about 1960, when I was 12.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The latest, 'Autopsy of a Superpower' is non-fiction about how the hippies helped create the upcoming fall of the United States, either by turning the rich against the rest of America, or giving the rich a wedge to use to divide the American people. I've always admired the 'Peace' aspect of hippie culture, but recognized early on that it was impossible with human nature as it is.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was forty years late with the trilogy (Yoonbarla, Lhar, Zhlindu) which would have been timely in 1970, but far out of mainstream by 2010 when it was finished enough for public view. By that time sci-fi speculation on sociological issues was passe and sci-fi was almost all war all the time so I did not even attempt to present it (The Second expedition) to a traditional publisher as there was a three year backlog at the few who would even read a new author.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I'm sorry to say that the downloads of my stories ran four to ten times faster on my own site, Kassidor.com, with 'Zhlindu' getting as many as 800 downloads a month. I had to give up my own site because I don't think raw HTML 4 will be supported much longer, and it was too much work to make such a site phone friendly. Smashwords seems to be oriented toward a less intellectual, more action readership and will probably only serve as a repository until sci-fi that is more about issues and less about action is popular again.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Spending some time in a world of peace, love and rock and roll. Getting away from the violence, hate and fear that dominates so much of our lives today.
What do your fans mean to you?
Because I'm not on social media (Hate, violence, fear) I don't have contact with many readers, I don't know if I can even call them fans. Most of the ones I do have contact with mean a lot more to me for other reasons. It would be nice to have some kind of contact with them, but I know there is a later question that will answer why that is difficult.
What are you working on next?
I now write STRICTLY for my own enjoyment. As of Jan 1 2022 there is a sequel to 'From the Heartland' concerning how we need to take back control of our world from the AI's and there is a missing episode of the Dorrick and TongSu series that I might get to someday. Whether I will live long enough to finish them or any others is questionable.
We understand your work is somewhat controversial, can you explain?
Most of my work concerns the modifications to human nature it would take to make the hippie culture work. Modifying human nature, in and of itself, is controversial, but eliminating the alpha male is especially so. I have received death threats from some, but applause from others. REAL sexual equality does not sit well with some, even some women. This is not just equality under the law, but modifications to human nature to make women as sexually adventurous as men. Most people are just not ready for that and probably won't be unless and until that modification is made. In the late 60's, early 70's women did experiment with that behavior, but that fad was not supported by biology and has mostly passed. This is part of the reason I am not on social media.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Normal everyday life of a retiree. You know, do the laundry, the dishes, empty the trash, all that kind of stuff. We live in a high rise condo that is a community in itself, we've been in towns with less people than this building. It's about 1/3 retirees so we have a much more active social life than we did when we lived on a homestead in the woods. We do a little charity work, but mostly just hang out by the pool or on the balcony and thank God for the good fortune to find a place as awesome as this that we can afford on pretty much Social Security alone.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Search science-fiction -> free. Sometimes non-fiction -> politics and society -> free. I like sex so I tried erotica but most of it is not about sex, love and beauty but about dominance, EVEN THAT WRITTEN BY WOMEN! and that turned me right off.
What is your writing process?
Scenes come into my head and I try to type them out before I lose it. Then I go back and fix what typo's I can find. Later on I try to arrange the scenes and connect them. I research things as they come up. Sometimes I think I'm one of the few free sci-fi authors who looks up the basic astrophysical formulas to try and make what I right at least possible by the laws of physics as we know them today.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
'The Memory Bank' by Wallace West was by no means the first story I ever read, but it was the first one to make an impact on me. It was SO unlike most sci-fi of it's time for several reasons: People could live indefinitely, youth could be preserved. The mechanism in the story was whooie, but the concept was there. Sexual equality. The starship captain was female. I know now the field is 60 or 70 percent female but that was the first place I ever encountered it. Lastly, and most important, the book was mainly about how we are weakening the human species by letting machines do too much for us. Since then more people take the stairs, walk and ride bicycles but in the late 50's / early 60's couch potato seemed to be everyone's aspiration and that book was the first place I saw anyone raising an alarm.
