Interview with Leeanna Morgan
Published 2018-07-05.
You live in New Zealand. Why did you decide to set your novels in Montana?
When I started writing Gracie's story in Forever Dreams I had no idea we'd end up in Montana. But Gracie is a determined woman. She hopped on a plane and left New Zealand for Big Sky country and the most incredible journey of her life. Along the way we discovered that New Zealand has more in common with Montana than we thought - amazing scenery, lots of wide open spaces, and people with kind hearts and warm smiles. We found a home away from home and decided to stay.
Who are the authors you enjoy reading?
I love happy endings :) My favorite authors are Nora Roberts, Jill Shalvis, Kristan Higgins, SJ McCoy, Melody Grace, Jayne Ann Krentz, Barbara Freethy, Tess Gerritsen, Debbie Macomber, Cora Seton, and Bella Andre.
What are the best things about being an author?
I enjoy bringing a character's happy ever after to life. It's wonderful plotting out a book, seeing my hero and heroine overcome obstacles and find true love. I also enjoy receiving feedback from my readers. It's wonderful when a story touches someone's heart.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
One of the first stories I remember reading was The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. All that food! Strawberries, cheeses, sausages, yummy cupcakes, and oranges galore. I would follow the little holes the caterpillar made as he transformed into a chrysalis and then into a beautiful butterfly. I lost myself in the story...I became the very hungry caterpillar. This book changed the way I thought about reading and stories. Looking back, it taught me about the power of words and images. Stories can pull a reader into a new world, take them to incredible places or on an emotional journey that can change their lives.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My laptop - my cell phone screen is too small.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
There are two things that bring me joy as a writer. The first is helping my characters find their happy ever after. The second is hearing from my readers. It's wonderful to know how a story has touched someone's life.
Describe your desk
My desk is wherever I'm sitting! I place my laptop on a small tray and write my stories wherever I am - in the car, the living room, or the lounge. I have a desktop PC that I use to format my books and do all of my website and social media things. My daughter also uses the same PC, so it's usually a little chaotic. (A quick sweep of everything into a box and I'm good to go!)
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love walking on the beach, in a park, or anywhere there is fresh air and beautiful scenery. I enjoy cooking with my children and grocery shopping! (Sounds kind of weird, but I enjoy walking along the aisles, comparing prices and looking for new products :))
What do you read for pleasure?
When I have the time I read a wide range of books. At the moment I'm reading Lee Child's 'The Midnight Line'. Next on my list is a book by Bella Andre. I also like non-fiction books, especially if they involve a bank heist, some kind of adventure, or a story about an inspirational person's life.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New Zealand - not on a farm, but in a city with a population of about 60,000 people. My dad loved country music and westerns. When all of my friends were listening to ABBA and Meatloaf, I was listening to Dolly Parton, Kenny Rogers, Crystal Gail, and John Denver :) I think this must have subconsciously influenced me when I chose Montana as the setting for my novels. I love open spaces, stories with a strong sense of community, and great families - everything I was able to enjoy as I grew into an adult.
