Interview with Leigh Court

Published 2014-12-29.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Fear Of Flying, is semi-autobiographical. The experts always say "write what you know" but this is the first time I actually took that advice.

I am deathly afraid of flying, and many of the situations that happen in the book were actually experiences from my own life. A job as a book publicist? Check. On a nationwide book tour with a travel writer? Check. Winter de-icing of plane wings and bouts of white-knuckle clear air turbulence? Check! Even the psychic predicting I'd never die in a plane crash actually happened to me. Anyone who reads Fear Of Flying will learn a lot about me :)
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I'm what they call a hybrid author. I am traditionally published, but I also self-publish. Self-publishing gives an author free rein to write the stories they want to write (possibly more niche or offbeat books) while traditional publishers tend to buy stories they think will sell to an established market. I think it makes smart economic sense to write for both outlets.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love to tell stories, and as a romance author I can guarantee that my characters will have a happy-ever-after (after I put them through enough angst to make them earn it, of course, LOL)!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I think every writer started off as an avid reader, and that's certainly me! There's nothing better than getting lost in a book. Not only for the sheer enjoyment of it, but for the many things you can learn without ever leaving your couch.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I was eleven years old when I wrote my first story about a high school girl and her band of friends who helped solve mysteries. I was bitten by the writing bug early!
What is your writing process?
I don't have a writing process, per se. I write whenever I can squeeze in a few free minutes. Like most people, I have a crazy busy life (including a family & a day job), but I'm a writer and a writer writes. Period. I can't not write.
How do you approach cover design?
I believe a book cover is *extremely* important in the publishing process. If you can catch a reader's eye with an arresting cover, they may take the time to read your blurb, and then hopefully be intrigued enough by the story to buy your book. I *always* hire a professional cover designer for my self-published books.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My e-reading device of choice is my iPad Mini. It's one of those Christmas gifts that you didn't think you needed, but now you don't know how you ever lived without it!
