Interview with Limey Lady

Published 2016-07-06.
Describe your desk
I don't have one. I work on a laptop balanced on my lap.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Keighley in the "wild west" of West Yorkshire (believe me, for years the sign welcoming visitors to town had been written over with "twinned with Dodge City"!). The place is actually a lot nicer than I just made it sound, and is surrounded by fields and hills and moors. It was, however, the site of one of the first Ripper attacks (as schoolkids we used to eat fish and chips in the alleyway where he struck).

Influence-wise, I'd say I use run-down industrial towns set in spectacular countryside. And, Heather's Busy Week aside, a lot of my work has a serial killer or two lurking in the background.
When did you first start writing?
When I was about fourteen and decided I was going to be the new Dennis Wheatley.
What's the story behind your latest book?
The protagonist, Heather Hunter, features in other stories of mine. Unlike everyone else, she hardly ever does what I want/expect her to do. One day I decided to set her loose and let her fill in her own back-story. Which she has done with predictable unpredictability.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Actually writing new scenes/passages. Editing and proof-reading are chores in comparison.
What are you working on next?
I have several irons in the fire. A couple more (shorter) "Heather" series. Re-writes of a series of full-length novels which feature Heather less prominently. I'm also most way through an ill-fated lesbian romance featuring completely new characters.
Who are your favorite authors?
I read all sorts of genres and authors. At one time I would have said Stephen King without hesitation. Unless I'd thought of Mario Puzo before jumping in with two feet ("Fools Die" is absolutely brilliant). Quite recently I've revisited Martina Cole and discovered Mandasue Heller. All good, as are many others.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I remember the weekly essays we had to write for English Language. One time I was supposed to write a spooky ghost story and came up with something out of Hammer House of Horror.
What is your writing process?
I spend a lot of time thinking and planning in advance. Then I write directly onto a Word document and polish and polish and polish. Unless Heather is involved, my writing usually goes from A to B as planned.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Watching sport on TV. Soccer, US Football, both codes of rugby, cricket, golf, tennis . . . you name it. Roll on the Olympics!
