Interview with Linda Maye Adams

Published 2017-06-17.
What is your writing process?
I write, really, like I read. I get an idea and start writing. Setting and character, and then I follow the story to see where it goes. No outline, no planning of any kind. It's a messy process for me because the ideas don't come in order, so I'm constantly moving around in my story, making adjustments here at there. Kind of like shaking out the wrinkles.
How do you approach cover design?
The first thing I think about is walking into Border's Bookstore. They had this table out front with a pile of new releases in paperwork, all genres. So I'd sift through, looking for a cover that caught my eye. It's got to say something about the genre and the book, and look like it would belong on that table. So I have all of that in mind when I search for an image. But I also look for ones that will represent me and who I am, and ones that won't take a lot of work to turn into a cover.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was eight years old. My best friend was writing a school play, and I wanted to write a story like she was doing. I also had an uncle and aunt who published children's books. I remember going to their house down in San Diego and seeing the digest style covers of The Writer sitting on their coffee table. Such interesting magazines to poke through!
What are you working on next?
I'm participating in "Writing in Public," which is going to be a short story each work, live for everyone.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
Kindle.
Describe your desk
My writing area consists of an Elfa desk with a zebra print desktop, brown and black waves. I have a desktop printer, and I've always preferred that over laptops. Laptops are a pain to type on, and the screens can't be set a comfortable height like a regular monitor can. I also have a pen mouse, which is an ergonomic mouse that turns my hand like I'm holding a pen. The mouse pad was from my grandmother's 90th birthday party and shows a picture of the Adams ancestors. I'm not neat, but I try to keep the area clean.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read science fiction, fantasy, and mystery, and pretty much anything that catches my interest.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is called Cursed Planet, third in the GALCOM Universe series. The series deals with a woman who can see ghosts. She's called on by Galactic Command to solve alien ghost problems. This story mashes together haunted meteors and 'man hunts man,' or in this case, alien hunts woman.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was a late bloomer, because I still thought that going traditional was better. But there were a lot of trends I start seeing that I didn't like, trends that favored the publishers and acted like the people who were providing the product to them were unimportant. Plus, I know from past history that if I submitted a book to agents, it would probably take a year to find one, if I did, and at least another year or two before it got published. I can put up a book in an afternoon.
