Interview with Linda Louise Rigsbee

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing, I'm probably outside working on a project, which might include wood work, gardening or something for my chickens. I am caregiver for my husband, so I take him to doctor appointments. I go to craft shows with my books and help promote other authors as founder of ProActive Writer's Group. I stay busy. =o)
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
The first story I wrote was "That Special Summer" and had it bound for my son at Christmas. I think that was 1984.
What is your writing process?
I am a multi-genre writer, so I generally have more than one book in process - different genres. I like to let the book guide me. I do a lot of research, so I always learn a lot while writing.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first story I can remember reading was Bambi - the original book, not the children's version. That was what gave me the fever. I'm dyslexic, so reading has always been somewhat of a problem (as is writing) but it isn't a disability. It's a handicap. If you want to do something bad enough, you will find a way.
How do you approach cover design?
I do the great big no-no. I design my own covers.
What do you read for pleasure?
I used to read a lot of Louis L'Amour books, but I like a wide variety now. I want it to be clean and well written.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Kindle Fire, but I still like the feel of a book.
Describe your desk
I designed and built my own corner desk, as well as all the bookshelves in my home office.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I was born in Kansas, but have lived in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Arizona and California. All that moving around probably influenced my wide range of subjects and locations.
When did you first start writing?
I can remember making up stories in my mind as early as age 8, but I didn't start writing them down until I was in my early 20's. Even then I hid them in my dresser drawer because I thought people would laugh at me for trying to be an author. I didn't start publishing until the mid 80's when I was in my 30's.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like to be in control of my destiny. Back when I first started self publishing, it was unpopular and expensive. I figured out how to home publish. I wrote the stories, designed the covers, printed and bound them in my home office. It was labor intensive, but I sold them as crafts.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Smashwords helps me get my name out there - and make a little money while I'm doing it.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing. I would write if I never sold a single copy. There is always a story or six inside me trying to beat its way out.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love hearing from my fans about how they enjoyed my books, but I also like to know how they think I could improve my writing. Writing is a difficult and often thankless job, but fans make publishing worthwhile.
Who are your favorite authors?
Mark Sullivan, Louis L'Amour, Laila Ibrahim, Kia Heavey, Jonathan G Meyer, Darrel Sparkman - I like to try out new authors.
