Interview with Linda Marshall

What is your e-reading device of choice?
What do you read for pleasure?
Poetry and history, mostly.
Describe your desk
Laptop surrounded by pieces of handwritten paper that I then type out into the computer!
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
Several places - London, Shropshire and Yorkshire mainly. My experience of different places - city and country - has not only reinforced my love of nature but also given me an awareness of different lifestyles, cultures, attitudes and so on.
When did you first start writing?
About five or six but properly when I was about 12 years old.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Hoping to entertain, enlighten and give pleasure to people and make them more aware of the world around them.
What are you working on next?
A few other volumes of poetry in the pipeline - two more about the Romani gypsy world and one volume of my translations of poetry in other languages - mainly German, French and Romanes and a few from Russian and Turkish.
Who are your favorite authors?
Loads - Shakespeare, Pope, Blake, Byron, Browning, Kipling, Masefield, Robert Service, Ted Hughes, William Carlos Williams, Whitman, Sara Teasdale, Heine, Trakl, Zweig, Akhmatova ... the list goes on!
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My husband and children!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Looking after my family, gardening, listening to music, watching TV.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I haven't written many stories - the first one I can remember is about a Romani girl escaping persecution.
What is your writing process?
I write with pen and paper and then type out later on to my laptop.
