Interview with Lindsey Goddard

Who are your favorite authors?
Clive Barker, Ramsey Campbell, Ray Bradbury, Shirley Jackson, Robert McCammon, Lisa Morton, Graham Masterton, F. Paul Wilson, Emily Bronte, Gary Braunbeck, Philip K. Dick, Anne Rice, Kristopher Rufty, Kurt Vonnegut, Scott Nicholson, Oscar Wilde, Stephen King, Dean Koontz and so many more!
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
When I was nine, I wrote a story about an evil princess who let her villagers live in poverty while she kept all the riches. Thieves attacked the village, looking for something of value. The villagers pointed them toward the castle and allowed them to kill the princess. The guards, having been badly treated as well, did nothing to stop it. This is heavy subject matter for a nine year old! Perhaps I was always destined to write horror!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, by Alvin Schwartz. I remember thinking, "This must be the best way to kill boredom. Just scare yourself!" A lot of Goosebumps by R.L. Stine quickly followed.
What do you read for pleasure?
I like to alternate dark fiction with non-fiction.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in the suburbs near St. Louis, MO, and even back then, I remember being jealous of people outside of the Midwest, in places with BEACHES and mountains and jungles. The closest I ever got to the scenery I craved was the camping grounds we used to frequent when I was little. I loved going to the lake, exploring the woods, and catching little critters. (Of course, I always let them go!)
What do your fans mean to you?
EVERYTHING!!
