Interview with Lindsey Tanner

What is your favorite book?
The Giver, by Lois Lowry. It was the first book I read that didn’t talk down to me or give me all the answers. It gave me choices and the opportunity to think.
What does your writing process look like?
Usually, I'll get an idea about my next story, and spend as much time as can just thinking about it. This can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months. Then I'll make an outline of the book. The details will change as I'm writing the story, but I stick to the outline as much as possible. I write about five pages a day, sometimes more, sometimes less, and then I spend time editing. During this time, I'm also editing my previous work, and coming up with ideas for my next story, so I kind of work in a cycle.

I write any time I get a spare moment, and on whatever’s handy. I don’t always carry a notebook with me, but I always have my cell phone, so I often text lines and paragraphs to my email, where I copy and paste them onto the document I’m working on.
Where do your story ideas come from?
Everywhere. They come from everywhere. One of my books got its start in a writing class, and another was prompted by a Britney Spears perfume commercial. Ideas are everywhere, but you'll only see them if you're looking.
What do you find easiest about writing?
That’s a draw between coming up with new ideas and creating titles for my books.
What do you find hardest about writing?
Naming my characters. It’s always the last thing that gets done. When I was little, I read a book called Latkes and Applesauce: A Hanukkah Story. One of the characters in it says that a name should fit like a glove, and that’s the approach I take to my characters’ names.
What made you start writing?
Reading was a really big deal in my family. My grandma taught me to read, and my parents read to me and my brother as we were growing up. It followed naturally that I wanted to tell stories of my own.
Why do churches and faith show up so much in your work?
My faith is a big part of my life. In fact, it’s the biggest part of my life. It has to spill over into my work, because it’s in everywhere else in my life, too.
What advice would you give aspiring writers?
My advice would be:
1) Write. Practice writing. Write to publish, write for fun. Just write.
2) Seek out more advice. There is more writing advice on the internet than I can list here, and much of it is from people who have been writing for longer than I have. Use your best judgment in deciding if any advice is right for you.
