Interview with Lisa Cresswell

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in North Carolina, which is a beautiful, diverse state. It has lots of history, which is great for inspiration. In fact, my latest novel Hush Puppy from Featherweight Press, is set there. I also have another work in progress set on the NC coast. I guess it's a big part of who I am now, even though I haven't lived there for a long time.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book, Hush Puppy, is an alternate Romeo & Juliet story about a black girl who falls in love with a white boy. When she takes the blame for him after he's involved in the accidental death of another girl, she's left wondering if he ever cared about her at all. It might be a story about race, but ultimately it's a story about forgiveness and the power of friendship. You can read more about it on my web site www.lisatcresswell.com
What is your writing process?
Outline, outline, outline! I never start a writing project without an outline these days. I've wasted too much time trying to write without knowing the ending already.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
It's probably not the first story I ever read, but I have fond memories of reading The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I loved the economy of words and the power of a story with so few words. I still love that book.
How do you approach cover design?
I look for dramatic photos that will represent a character in my books. It's got to have some pow-effect to me. I have a dear friend who's a photoshop wiz to help me, so I defer to his judgment on technical issues. Between the two of us, I think we've come up with some pretty amazing covers.

Your best friend is really your guardian. Your grandmother is really a fairy. Your birthday present holds a magical power. And you think your nemesis is just a 13 year old girl. That was before you encountered The Morrow, a creature from another world sent to stop you from fulfilling your destiny.
