Interview with Melissa Churcher

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Sydney, Australia. I moved around ALOT due to family circumstances. It was the fact that I was a regular school changer that influenced me to write my story the most. A childhood full of change was bound to lead to sharing a story.
When did you first start writing?
I decided to start writing my story about two years ago. I had experienced a time of immense grief and my world was forever changed. I had always wanted to write but never knew about what. It was at this time that I knew I had a story to share and it was my life story. I went along to a writers workshop and came up with a complete outline. I dived into writing and wrote the first five chapters over the next month but then I stopped, distracted by life and I lost my motivation. I left the story unfinished for a while and returned a few months later re-energised with wisdom and inspiration. I spent a lot of time refining and researching the best way to publish and launch and I've achieved a #1 Best Seller! It feels incredible!
What's the story behind your latest book?
My book is a conversational and interactive account of my own personal story of life, loss and the path to finding joy and happiness.
In Truth and Joy, you will find reflections on:
• My difficult childhood
• Anorexia
• Divorce
• Being a mum
• Blending a family and finding new love
• Grief and loss
• Discovering yoga and the universe
• Getting REAL about life
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Well to write about your own life has proven beyond cathartic. It is so healing. It has opened my heart and I have found forgiveness for myself and others. In the many times I read my story back to myself during the editing stage, I became prouder and prouder. I felt proud of my own personal growth and I felt proud of how I offered my story to my readers in light, conversational tone.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family. I have two teenage boys who are my life. My husband is a wonderful man that I love to support and love. In my business I get to be creative in my day and serve others. It is this ability to serve that inspires me. I serve through my writing, teaching yoga and sharing essential oils.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Walking my dog, adoring my cat. Teaching and practicing yoga. Educating others about essential oils. Swimming in the ocean.
Describe your desk
My desk is large and faces my backyard. My backyard is a tropical oasis of greenery around my pool. It lifts my spirit and reminds me how lucky I am to be working from home and tapping into my creativity and soul.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
It was time for my soul to start speaking.
What offerings will come about as a result of your book?
I am so open to what is in store for the future. I am in the process of collaborating with others to offer retreats both locally and internationally. I would also like to expand upon the learning points in my book so that I may offer an event or course for those who would like to explore the ideas further.
What do your fans mean to you?
EVERYTHING! The feedback I have had so far has melted my heart. I am bursting with love and feel so humbled. It is a feeling like no other to be able to have such an impact on people. People have related, they have cried, they have laughed and I feel so connected to these fans.
