Interview with Lori Meyer

When did you first start writing?
I started writing during my fourth year of teaching. I had awoken from a vivid dream and became curious as to who the characters were and what happened before and after the segment I saw in my dream. The students in my class, at the time, were very involved in my interests. Many of them enjoyed reading paranormal books as I do. They became as curious as me about what was going on with those characters. So through the combined enthusiasm of my students, my own two daughters, and me my first novel emerged. From there, I continued that story into four novels and then began writing other short stories with different story lines. I found I was continuously asking "what next" and began a spin off from my original series. I continue to write for my own series but also encourage students to pursue writing.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I am currently working on the third book in my first series and the second book in my spin off series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
The freedom to write at my own pace, be in control of my story line, and create my own book covers. While it was a challenge to create my book covers, I like that I could determine what aspect of the story was shown as a cover and keep a theme within each series.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being in touch with my creative side and being able to express that though characters readers can relate to and create engaging stories to draw them in. I receive an immense feeling of accomplishment each time I've completed a story.
What do your fans mean to you?
My characters are merely words on a page until someone picks up the book and dives in. Without readers, my characters' stories exist on paper but have no purpose. When someone begins his/her journey into my character's world and discovers pure enjoyment while following that journey to the end, I experience an extreme feeling of accomplishment. Readers are the fuel for stories.
What are you working on next?
At the moment, I am concentrating on bringing my two series to a close. However, I have jotted down some notes for a new story idea about a teenage girl, Ralena, who has just come into her powers and her fate lays in the hands of an older boy who is bound to the one person who wants Ralena's powers and then to see her dead. This idea is still in its infancy with much development needed before I even begin plotting out the story line.
Who are your favorite authors?
To completely answer that question, I'd need a few pages. I love the works from Richelle Mead, Heather Brewer, Alyson Noel, Kerrelyn Sparks, Lynsay Sands, Lara Adrian, J.R. Ward, and so many others. If a book sounds intriguing, I usually give it a try. However, those are just some of the authors who I anxiously await the next book from them.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family and my job. I have two wonderful daughters and a great supportive husband. I also enjoy my job. Even though there are days that are exhausting or frustrating, I am grateful to have the opportunity to help children learn.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am an avid reader. I am hardly ever without a book in my hand. My family will even poke fun because I always bring a book to our picnics. I also enjoy baking, playing the piano, and taking walks in the evening.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I belong to Bookbub but I also will peruse amazon and smashwords from time to time to see if anything catches my eye. I also "liked" a few book related pages on Facebook and will learn of titles there too.
What is your writing process?
After I get a story idea, I work out an outline for the story line. I first plan out most of the story but don't restrict myself to not changing things or adding things as I go. And even on occasion, the characters do something that changes the story. Therefore, my outline sees many revisions as I write the story. As for my ideas; so many times they come to me at random times. I could be driving home from work and have to pull over to jot something down. Or I will be in the shower and complete scenes will pop in my head. Sometimes, the hardest time to think is when I am sitting at the computer.
How do you approach cover design?
I have to have a vision in my head before I pursue any cover design. The cover for my first novel was created by a student I had in my class at the time. I told her what I wanted and she designed it for me. Since then I have had help from my daughters and my nephew. The book cover has to show an important aspect from the story and I keep the covers from the same series with a similar theme.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read paranormal romance, young adult, and erotic stories in my free time.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My husband bought me an IPad for Christmas one year because he couldn't decide if I would like a Kindle or a Nook better, so I have the best of both worlds.
