Interview with Lorraine L. Hayden

Published 2023-05-22.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up along the FDR Drive in Lower Manhattan. (NYC) and my bedroom window looked directly across the East River. So as a kid, I would often sit, look out my window at night and imagine all sorts of monsters coming out from the river along with an alien spacecraft and things of that sort zooming through the high-rise buildings. I have always had a very vivid imagination. So much so that it made me an avid daydreamer. One does not often equate a busy city life with inspiring- influencing writing creativity, but for me, it did.
What was the first speculative fiction book you ever read?
It was War Of The Worlds by H.G. Wells. I was about in the 4th or 5th grade.
When did you first start writing?
I started writing short stories when I was a kid. I actually was too shy to show them to anyone. Fast forward to adulthood, I actually did not start writing until my late forties. Ive always wanted to write but I had priorities that came first.
What's the story behind your latest book?
My latest book is inspired by the concept of a collective consciousness for all of mankind. What if we were all on the same page, had one common goal for the betterment of our species, well the entire planet for that matter. Would people see it as a better way of life or a way for the power that be(whomever that who be) to control us.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I wanted to prove to myself that I have what it takes to be a writer. I realize I have a long road ahead of me but I am in it for the long haul.
How does your family feel about you pursuing a writing career?
My children support me one hundred percent.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I love the process of writing. For me being in my own head and turning off the "noise" of the outside world is such a wonderful feeling. And of course when my readers. I must say people who read my work, whether they love it or hate they brings me joy because I know my work is part of something greater than me. It will be around long after I am gone.
What do your fans mean to you?
My fans are my creative life line.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a fantasy story set in a marvelous kingdom in a world with two suns, a royal family that is pretty much like any family here on earth except they have access to wondrous creatures and magic.
Who are your favorite authors?
Some of my favorite authors include Stephen King, Dean Kootz, George R. R. Martin and many more.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Knowing that my family is with me on my writing journey inspires me to get out of bed each and every day.
