Interview with Louise Lake

What are you working on next?
I'm currently working on a variety of young adult fantasy novels.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The thought of creation inspires me, as well as my family, friends and the possibilities that the universe has to offer us. I love to write and just create anything and everything.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I like to do the usual things like watching movies, listening to music and attending live concerts, spending time with my friends and family, drawing, cooking and travelling.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I usually search for ebooks by their category or the Authors name, but I also look at recommendations from friends and family members too.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Oh now we're going back in time! I can't remember the exact first story I wrote, but I know that all I was interested in as a kid were horror stories, the paranormal and the weirdly wonderful.
I can remember writing short horror stories about vampires, werewolves and monsters, but nothing too specific. Although, I do remember the first poem I wrote at around the age of eleven, which is now titled: Realm of Fantasy. It begins with a very unusual line, 'Up the stairs and down the wall,' which has been published in my book Poems for all Occasions.
What is your writing process?
My writing process differs with each book I write. Sometimes, I use the method of free writing without planning the story beforehand, then other times I will write a full outline of the books plot and character profiles to work from.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I cannot remember the first ever story I read, my memory is terrible! But, there was one book that I loved as a kid which inspired me to write about monsters, that book is called 'The Monster book of Witches, Vampires, Spooks and Monsters' by Colin and Jacqui Hawkins.
When I grew up my copy of this wonderful fantasy book had sadly vanished, probably during a clear out! But, luckily I have recently purchased another copy online to relive those magical memories that inspired me all those years ago. The internet is a godsend for finding those old books you'd forgotten the names of over the years.
How do you approach cover design?
Cover design is tricky, as it has to fit perfectly with your book and also say something about the author at the same time. I highly recommend the amazing designs from selfpubbookcovers.com, as they have a great selection in different genres by a number of skilled artists.
Describe your desk
My desk is an absolute tip! It's not always that bad, honest :-) but, I do have a tendency to leave sticky notes all over my desk and laptop for reference - a bad habit I hope to get rid of one day.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing around the young age of ten or eleven, but, I was just experimenting back then. I would say I have been writing seriously now for several years.
What do you read for pleasure?
I enjoy reading young adult, horror, sci-fi, paranormal romance, historical fiction, fantasy, adventure, self-help, and romantic comedy books.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I was motivated to become an Indie Author by the many other successful Indie Authors, my family and friends. I wish to make a living from what I love most - writing stories. Also, I find the modern inventions of ebooks are amazing. Don't get me wrong I love, love, love the smell of an actual book, but ebooks are great too :-)
