Interview with S. McKane

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I have an upscale consignment store called Consignium (I created the name by combining two words-consignment and emporium :-) The store is located in the Catskills yet most of the Designer and Vintage items that fill my racks and shelves are recycled from New York City.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first stories weren't written they were created off the cuff and told to my brother at bedtime. Each night my brother would ask to hear the rest of the story, I always complied because I enjoyed telling them as much as my brother enjoyed listening.

I believe the first story I actually put down on paper was a satire that I handed to my journalism teacher, Mr. Frank, in the Bronx. He enjoyed it so much he turned it over to the drama teacher. She in turn produced it as a school play. Some day I'll tell you more.
What is your writing process?
Good question! I'll let you know, when I know.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Nancy Drew and the Clock... hooked me on mysteries for the rest of my life.
How do you approach cover design?
I did approach it myself to no avail. Although my mother loved my cover design, it was formatted incorrectly, my fault. Consequently, I hired an amazing designer from California, Raffi Antounian. I LOVE the new cover!
What do you read for pleasure?
Stephen King novels.
Describe your desk
Cluttered corner computer desk, but I know where everything is.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in New York City. Spending most of my time in the Bronx and Manhattan. I am inspired by New Yorkers- the way they talk, the way they act and their never ending fodder. You know... there are a million stories on the streets of New York.
What are you working on next?
A sequel to Gumshoe Goddess, a cookbook- "Recipes to Die For" and editing some children's books that I wrote and put on the back burner.
What do your fans mean to you?
Published 2013-09-25.
