Interview with Miguel Suarez

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
My first story was written in 1980 after I returned from China. It was titled: "China: A Country With A Smile." I remember that ever person, woman or man, was dressed in blue. So, I will remember China as the "Blue Wave."
What is your writing process?
I study the subject matter and make an outline before writing the first word. For example: LA MIGRA USA--LA VERDAD is backed by a 2045 page immigration book written by Ira Kurzban. DR. MICKEY ON ATKINS - The Mijas Diet is backed by Dr. Atkin's book and seven other diet books. It takes a longtime to finally begin the writing process.
Who is your favorite author(s)?
Truth be told: John Grisham because he controls the short sentences a la Ernest Hemingway. He has a magnificent way to tell a story. You are actually there, at the moment. I have studied his writings and used brief examples in my "punctuation" books.
With "who" would you like to drink red wine?
I like to drink several glasses of Pesquera (Ribera del Duero) with my wife, Yolanda, at *LOS ABANICOS, Benahavis, Malaga, Spain. This is the best restaurant in the world for suckling roasted pig.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible (I studied it at The Choate School - 1948 - 1952). The 1940 Cuban Constitution (one of the most advanced). The US Constitution (Freedom Reigns!). I love reading law books: US Supreme Court Cases. (The Dissents were always my favorites.)
What do you read for pleasure?
I love travel books. I actually make Travel Picture Books. With them you can travel without leaving home. I take the color pictures and write the short text. I have about 20 of them published at: www.lulu.com. My favorites are: Egypt, Turkey (Istanbul), and Paris. Next year I will publish: Normandy and Brittany (France).
With "whom" would you like to have dinner?
I do not know. Maybe with a past president of the USA. Nixon for sure but he left us. Clinton seems to be an interesting guy. And "W" is a man that adores his family.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I am a failure. Next question, please.
Describe your desk
It is a cheapo. Light brown colored. Two feet wide Five feet long. Four drawers. I've had the thing for over 40 years. At time she talks back to me. It is placed in front of a window over looking the street where I live. The passing cars keep me busy.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Miami, Florida. I went to boarding school at Miami Country Day School. Since I had no family in Miami, the headmaster and mentor, L.B. Summers, actual formed me. He was a brilliant and kind man. I loved him. Still do. He had a strong character for teaching reading and writing. Manners ruled the day. Thank you, sir. Due to him here I am.
When did you first start writing?
I think it was at The Choate School. I remember writing a very controversial paper about the young United Nations. I never like the organization. I felt that the USA had given freedom to so many countries and people that the UN was not a necessary body. I was right, right? Next, at the U of M law school: I took a special course where writing opinions was the topic. From there we jump to lawyering. I did extensive writing, legal stuff.
What's the story behind your latest book?
LA MIGRA USA -- LA VERDAD was my last book. There is no story. It intends to help Hispanics to visit the USA as "turistas" and immigrate to the USA--legally. I wrote it in Spanish and English (so the legal stuff is clear). At my age, I want to help those persons. I want them to know "what is what." There are so many "tramitadores" (non-lawyers) out there that take their dollars and give them headaches--"bandoleros." With my book (if they buy it and read it) no one can defraud them. They will know their rights and obligations. It is short and to the point. It contains many examples. I am proud of it.
Are you retired from the legal field?
No. But I do not work as I did years back. This immigration chaos has me working to help people. LA MIGRA USA -- LA VERDAD is an important short book for Hispanics. I am here to help them!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I just jumped into the swimming pool. Ask me the same question next year. OK?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The final product makes me very happy. Long hours. Long days. If the book helps one person, I am satisfied. All of my books are "help" books. Fat: get Dr. Mickey On Atkins. Writing: get PUNCTUATION. You get my drift.
What do your fans mean to you?
I do not have many fans. I have not pushed sales. But those few who have read my books have expressed good opinions. Let's hope you all can help me.
What are you working on next?
Traveling to France and Spain (December 2014, January, and February (2015)). Mental rest, good wine. But will do two or more Travel Picture Books. Depends. What will I see?
Who are your favorite authors?
My #1 is John Grisham.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The challenges I have set for myself, and my family. Love them all.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I read a lot, and love TV--FNC and sports. I have been trying to learn the soccer rules. Tennis is my favorite sport (I played it so so.) to watch: RAFA NADAL. A real champ that guy. Will he win four more big ones to reach 18?
Last question, Dr. Mickey: Do you study or read business matters?
Yes. Love reading business sections and news letters. Creating portfolios is a hobby. I follow Vanguard and Fidelity. Annuities, too, because they have a significant place in some portfolios. Older folks need to have some "guaranteed income for life" to assist Social Security. That keeps them "INDEPENDENT." Thanks for the opportunity to answer some questions. GOD BLESS THE USA!
