Interview with M Henry

Published 2018-11-23.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have always been an enthusiastic reader myself and as soon as ebooks appeared, I started to buy them and download them on my computer. In that way i assembled my own private library. Now I have the library on my smartphone, and where ever I go, my library goes with me. I visit sites like Smashwords, Kobo and Amazon, as well as Dutch sites, since I am originally Dutch.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When I am not writing, I am creative in other ways. I am living in the central part of Spain for nearly a year on the outskirts of a little village. Me and my partner are keeping animals, like goats, chickens, fish and we have three energetic dogs. When I am not writing I am busy walking dogs, planting (we try to grow our own vegetables) and I have another hobby, making jewelry. I also sing in the village choir, so twice a week I join the ladies of the village choir to practice.
How do you approach cover design?
I try to think what is related to the title of the story. I then go through my own archives to see if I have a photo that meets my requirements. If not, I go out and make my own pictures. Making pictures, pictures of the magnificent nature over here in particular, is another hobby of mine. I can combine it all in my books. It seems as if everything falls into place.
What is your writing process?
I do not have a specific writing process. Sometimes I get inspired by items I read on the news or by events that happen in my daily life. I sit down and try to write a story about it. It gives me pleasure to do it and so far I have received a lot of positive reactions.
What do you read for pleasure?
I am still a reader who practically reads everything I can get. I love romance, I love historical novels, but I also love crime stories.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read on my smartphone.
Describe your desk
My desk is actually a kitchen table. If I look through the window, I see Spanish mountains in the sun. If I look through the window on my right hand side, I see the veranda with two dogs lazing about.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Holland. I can't think how it has influenced my writing, since I never had time to write when I was living and working over there.
When did you first start writing?
I started to write seriously in September two years ago. I love the vicinity and the nature over here and wanted to write a story, taking place in this beautiful valley where I live. It inspired me and still does.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I like their support. When I have a query or a problem they support me whenever they can. I have now published three e books with Smashwords and I am in the final stages of my fourth novel. It will also be published with Smashwords.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The greatest joy of writing for me, is to tell a story and I hope people will enjoy reading the story just as much as I enjoyed writing the story.
Who are your favorite authors?
I love Diana Gabaldon and her Outlander Saga. Another favorite is George Martin. I prefer his books over the television series of Game of Thrones. I think my all time favorite is J R R Tolkien. I used to read The Hobbit as a child, and read it to my children as well.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
The climate here is wonderful and I have three dogs. I take them for their morning walk through the valley and nature here is absolutely awesome.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I don't remember the first story I read, since I was about five years old when I started to read.....centuries ago.
What do your fans mean to you?
I love to meet my fans. I had the pleasure of meeting some of them and I am grateful that they like my stories.
What are you working on next?
At present I am working on my sixth novel. It is called La Olla which literally means The Pot. At this moment I can only divulge that the story starts in England and it will end in Spain.
