Interview with Michael Dorsey

Published 2014-07-15.
Describe your desk
On good days, it's just my laptop & hard drives... every other day, though, it looks like a modern art exhibit.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I'm from Yonkers, NY. Some people call it the "Sixth Borough" because it's so close to NYC. It's definitely the kind of place where you need to have your wits about you.
When did you first start writing?
I first started writing when I was about 17. Back then, I had trouble sleeping. Eventually, on one of those restless night, I just sat down & started typing away. Before long, I had the makings of a decent story on my hands. After going over it again (during my waking hours), I started to polish it more & more. Eventually, it became the story you're all reading today.
What's the story behind your latest book?
This is the beginning of a series and I want it to not only be memorable, but I want it to have an impact. Once you get into the story and grow comfortable with the characters, you find yourself familiar with them to the point of feeling as if you know them personally. That is the connection I'm looking for with this first entry into the series.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always had to things on my own, to one degree or another. Since I wanted to put this book out on my own terms, indie/self publishing was the best avenue to maintain that pride.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, it's opened me up to a greater audience... let's see how it plays out from here.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
The overwhelming sense of omnipotence. Whatever you want that life or world to be, the only limits are you imagination & your willingness to rewrite the rules either a little bit or a lot. That is such an intoxicating feeling.
What do your fans mean to you?
They're my reason to keep writing, they make it ALL worthwhile for me. Without my readers, I'd just be another guy typing away on a laptop, know what I mean?
What are you working on next?
Aside from continuing the "Ghost" series, I have a few other one-shot ideas that I'm currently working on. Some slightly biographical work & a sci-fi story that I've been rolling around for a few months. All that should keep me busy for a while.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
Even though the world was spinning on just fine before I got & will continue to do so after I'm gone, knowing that there are some things that only I can do... and if I don't do them, they won't get done and I can't have that on my conscience.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
If I'm not writing, I'm usually just trying to decompress from my day job or just kicking & listening to music...
