Interview with Michael Devaney

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It was a story written for a school english project. We not only had to write a story, we also had to bind and cover the pages to create a book. Although I don't remember the title, my story was about a treasure hunt in, and around, the pyramids of Egypt. I remember recieving an A++ on the assignment for creating unexpected twists and hardships for the characters.
What is your writing process?
I seldom edit while I'm writing, I save that for later. I think it's important, and it works best for me, to continue the flow of writing while the story is "hot" and presenting itself. The real magic, and fun, happens during the re-writing process, but an uninterrupted initial draft gives a solid foundation for the editing process.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Yes. It was "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde. I loved the depth and intrique of the story. It wasn't just a "surface" story that followed the standard storytelling pattern. From there, with my interest in reading piqued, I ventured to "The Lord of the RIngs", by J.R.R. Tolkien and "Pet Sematary", by Stephen King and have been an avid reader ever since.
How do you approach cover design?
The importance of a quality cover should not be underestimated. I usually have a general idea of the design in my head which I convey to my cover designer using a rudimentary sketch and description. After that I let the designer take over and listen to their advise. Then we collaborate (add or subtract as needed) until I'm satisfied with the final product.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
The Bible is a standard favorite of mine for it's spiritual, philisophical and wisdom teachings, but for recreational reading my five favorite books are "The Lord of the Rings", "IT", "And Then There Were None", "Jurassic Park", "The DaVinci Code". As far as favorite reads, I'd also have to give honorable mentions to "Inherit the Wind" and "A Christmas Carol". I have a broad and diverse interest in reading material, but most important to me is originality of story and richness and depth of character. Each of these books brings a unique story line with fun, memorable characters.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
Everyone has a story to tell but, until recently, publishing outlets were limited. The digital age and the invent of the eReader removed those barriers, making it possible for all storytellers to share their work. Once that happened, I just couldn't help myself from joining in the fun!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I enjoy the freedom and creativity I feel while writing. Sometimes my stories surprise me with unexpected turns and lead me down wonderfully adventurous roads.
Who are your favorite authors?
J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Stephen King, John Irving... shall I continue?
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I enjoy the outdoors (hunting and fishing), movies, sports and leisure travel with my family.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first published article for North American Whitetail magazine in 2004 and have been writing ever since.
