Interview with Mary L. Lyon

What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My relationship with God. I know He has a plan for my day. I know there is something for me to do for Him.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I am an avid reader. I also do yardwork and projects around the house. I am also very busy with ministry through my church. My hope is that God will expand my ministry.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I receive e-mails from bookclubs, ask friends, and look up authors I enjoy reading. Sometimes I will read a new author just to try someone new. I have found some great authors this way.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I remember one particular story I wrote in high school. It was about how we cemented our world eliminating all plant life. We died from lack of oxygen. I thought it was quite imaginative.
What is your writing process?
I try to break my thoughts down into smaller pieces. I like short chapters. I also like chapter titles to make it easy to find the thought in the book. Thus, I tend to have sections of thoughts. I do a lot of thinking before I actually sit down and try to write. And, of course, there are lots of edits. I have a good friend who does the final edit for me.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I actually do not. I just remember being fascinated by all I could learn by reading. As a young child, I read the typical books but also books on earthquakes, volcanoes, nature, science. Reading opened up a world of learning for me.
How do you approach cover design?
I have a feeling in mind. I look for the picture that I believe captures the feeling. I like to feel what I read.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
1. Bible - my Christian faith is built on the truth of the Bible.
2. Free for the Taking (Joseph R. Cooke) - He does a phenomenal job explaining the grace of God.
3. The Hiding Place (Corrie Ten Boom) - such beautiful nuggets of truth in a true story.

There have been so many books in my life. These are probably the top three.
What do you read for pleasure?
I read just about every kind of Christian fiction. I like mysteries, romances, historical settings, allegorical and even fantasy. I like historical books. And, I read a lot of non-fiction Christian books. My favorite non-fiction authors are A. W. Pink, Andrew Murray, and Charles H. Spurgeon. I have recently discovered a modern writer, N. T. Wright. I appreciate his style of writing.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I have a Nook. I enjoy it very much.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I find word of mouth is the most effective. I have conducted free book giveaways which I find valuable. People referrals is by far the best way to promote a book. We trust the opinions of others.
Describe your desk
Cluttered with books.
When did you first start writing?
I truly first started to write seriously in 2014. I did an outline for a book in 1989. I have not yet written that book. There was a lot of change in my life and so I decided to pursue a passion I had from a young age, to write. I have very much enjoyed writing.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I like the control it gives the author. It allows someone to get published with minimal cost but still produce a quality product. For the first book I have published with them, "Jesus Christ, Why," it was important it be free. Indie allows for that.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
The step by step explanation of how to successfully e-book publish allows the author to control the process. Questions and help are provided in a timely manner. Smashwords is set up for the success of the author. It is amazing what the founders have accomplished.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
My initial thought is the actually writing of my thoughts in a way that others can benefit. Yet, when you get the positive response from a reader who has benefitted from your book, it is an amazing feeling. Knowing others are being ministered to by what I have written is truly surreal.
What do your fans mean to you?
This has taken me a bit aback. I am honored and humbled when someone gets excited to meet me and have me sign a book. I am deeply touched.
What are you working on next?
I am working on a third book that a friend asked me to write. I am also working on a devotional for a ministry I work with. And, I want to start a sequel to "Jesus Christ, Why." I also want to do some painting around the house.
