Interview with Heather Mace

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. I was in my lower teens. It was a terrible, rambling story about a girl at summer camp. I had never gone to summer camp. Traveling there in my imagination was the first spark that led to my burning desire to write.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Ideas swirl in my head constantly. When one idea becomes more persistent than the others, I have to get it down on virtual paper so that I can clear my head. The greatest joy of writing is when I read what I have written and feel that I have successfully translated it from my brain into something I can share with others.
Describe your desk
My desk is completely organized... unless I'm using it to build something out of Lego.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I read most things on my nook classic. I also have a tablet with nook, kindle, and aldiko apps.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I have several favorite authors. But I search for free books to help me discover potential new favorites. I often search for the newest, most recently published free books to try and find someone, or something that I haven't seen before.
What are your five favorite books, and why?
These are the books I have read and re-read the most times. In no particular order:
The Trumpet of the Swan by E. B. White. I loved this as a kid, and have re-read it many times as an adult.
Curious Wine by Katherine V. Forrest. It's an almost timeless story of self discovery.
If Tomorrow Comes by Sidney Sheldon. A fun, twisted tale of triumph and intrigue with a little romance thrown in the mix.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. Not only is it hilarious, but it was the first thing I ever read that seemed as "outside the box" as I was.
The Dictionary.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I spend a lot of time on DIY projects. I am currently in the middle of laying laminate flooring in the guest room. Sadly, the older I get, the longer the recovery time between work days. I also love movies, TV, comic books, Lego, video games, cooking, reading, and spending time with my family.
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
I always feared the idea of submitting my work for publication only to have someone else control the content and distribution of my work. When I noticed how many eBooks were distributed by Smashwords, I looked into it and found that it offered the freedom I had been searching for as an artist. Smashwords also makes it possible to publish novellas ans short stories as easily as novels. As I write this, I have yet to upload my first story, so my success is currently being measured in opportunity rather than sales and downloads. The opportunity means everything to me, and I am grateful to Smashwords for renewing my excitement about writing.
