Interview with E. M. DuBois

Published 2016-11-15.
When did you first start writing?
When I was twelve, in the middle of the night, sitting at the desk under my loft when with a school notebook in front of me and a dull pencil.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes. It's a fantasy I started when I was twelve, and am currently rewriting to reflect how I've grown as a writer. I'll still keep the original draft, to remind myself of that every time I look at it.
What is your writing process?
First I jot down some ideas and themes, a setting, and a few of the characters. Then I just keep adding and adding until I have a plot. Then I flush out the characters. Next I make sure I have an ending. No ending, no story. Most important to me, after I've roughly planned out enough, I write it out by hand before transcribing to my laptop. For me, it adds quality, and I use the act of transcribing as my first editing.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Experiencing other stories through any medium I can get my hands on. Books, ebooks, movies, video games, Old-time radio and Chapter A Day on WPR.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
My phone, mostly, since I already had one. I deleted a lot of games I used to have on it just to make more room for more ebooks.
