Interview with Lynne Garner

When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
When not writing I'm either teaching, preparing paperwork for the workshops I teach or enjoying a long walk with the dog. When dog walking I tend to take my camera with me and between ball throwing I try to take a few quick snaps of the wildlife the dog has managed not to scare off.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Most of the books I read are written by friends or are books my friends have read, enjoyed and suggested I might like.
What is your writing process?
It depends on the book I'm writing. For my traditional tales retold the first step is locating the oldest sources I can for the tales I wish to retell. When I've sourced the books I read, read and read. Once I've finish my research reading I bullet point the action of the stories I enjoyed. I then start to flesh out the story trying to make them enjoyable and easy to read (many of the books I read are at least 100 years old so the language used is not reader friendly and often not very politically correct). Once I have the first draft completed I place the story to one side for a few days, go back to it and edit. I repeat this process at least three times then send to a professional proof reader/editor for her input. Then the editing process is repeated until I'm happy.
What are your three favourite books, and why?
Hare About the House - based on the true story of a hand-reared hare who shares his life with the family that saved him.
Marley and Me - As a dog owner I can really relate to the daft things that dog did and the bond between Marley and his family.
Soul Music - Just love My Pratchett's sense of humour and the character that is Death.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
A Kindle
Describe your desk
A laptop, a screen, an assortment of pens and pencils surrounded by a sea of paper.
When did you first start writing?
I have a couple of stories (only one or two are finished) hidden in the loft that I wrote in my very early teens. However I started writing professionally in 1997.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Often when a character starts to form I have an internal monologue with them and I can't stop them talking to me until I start to write their story. So getting them onto paper and getting them to shut up is always good.
Who are your favorite authors?
Terry Pratchett, Susan Price (she's been published traditionally and also publishes as an Indie) and Paul Stewart.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I think inspires is the wrong word it's more who bullies me out of bed each day and that is most definitely our dog, Tasha. She has boxes that need to be ticked and this can't be done until her slaves are out of bed.
Where is the oddest place you've written?
A picture book story came to me fully formed whilst throwing the ball for the dog in the middle of a local playing field. So between ball throws I wrote the story in the notes app on my phone.
