Interview with Maggie Dann

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in small cathedral city in middle England close to the Welsh border. This is my first novel which is basically a true story and where the main characters initially met.
When did you first start writing?
My first attempt at writing a novel was in August 2012 after I retired from full time work. That novel was shelved when my life changed dramatically and a true story emerged.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I travel extensively and almost continuously. I enjoy visiting new countries, meeting new people and experiencing different cultures
How long have you been travelling?
I have been travelling for just over 3 years, ever since we decided against a conventional lifestyle. We choose not to have a permanant home prefering to rent in the countries we visit.
Which countries have you visited?
I draw a distinction between countries I have visited and those that I have lived in for a number of months. I have lived in Cyprus, France, Italy, Antigua and of course England. In addition I have visited Tunisia, Spain, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Singapore, Bali, Rarotonga, Tahiti, USA, Scotland , China, Austria, Germany, Belgium, San Marino, Andorra and the Republic of Ireland.
What has been your favourite experience so far?
It is hard to choose as each destination has been so different, however, on balance I think the four months in Antigua has got to be at the top, we didn't hire a car and used the buses that were used by local people which was a wonderful and friendly experience, we also met so many other great people at the yacht club bar
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
To put the computer on and give life to the ideas which I had in bed during the night
What are you working on next?
I am working on a follow up book which recounts the exploiits of the two main characters as they travel the world
Have you found writing your first novel easy?
Challenging I think would be the right word, many sleepless nights, early mornings and frustrations along the way but very, very satisfying when it was finished
What has given you most satisfaction when writing this novel?
Completing it after nearly four years. If they were still alive, I would love my school teachers to read it. I didn't have a very good education and I don't think that they would have believed I could write a book, I also hope they would have enjoyed reading it
