Interview with Maggie O'Dempsey

What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Writing has always been an escape for me. As a young girl I was constantly bullied and because I was extremely shy I had no other way of soaring above adversity. With two older sisters I learn about romance and cute boys from early on. Writing gave me all those experiences that were missing in my life. Writing romance was my way of playing Barbies once I was too old to play Barbies; and let me tell you my Barbie games were as intense as any romance novel out there, only PG-13, well mostly...LOL!
What do your fans mean to you?
Every time I read about anyone liking my stories or putting my fan-fiction in their favorites it truly makes my heart sing. I am so overjoyed to bring happiness and enjoyment to those who are kind enough to allow me into their lives. I wish I could give every single one of them a big hug and being a new author I probably could. If you are a fan, XOXO!
What are you working on next?
Right now I am working on the third Rivercast Immortals book. I had to figure out which of my boys would get their Happily Ever After next. My boys, they want some lovin'. I can say that I am 80% sure it's the ginger twins turn although I'm still debating if they should have one book or two. Also making a Sci-fi world for a different future series, having some fun with that. I am always writing the ideas that come to my head and I have a massive drawer filled with works in progress.
Who are your favorite authors?
Wow so many. I write romance because I like to read romance. Some of my favorite authors are:
My Paranormal Divas and inspiration: Gena Showalter, J.R. Ward, Kresley Cole, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Lara Adrian, Nalini Singh, Christine Feehan, Larissa Ione and so many others.
I also enjoy historical and some contemporary romances. Some of the authors I enjoy are:
Bertrice Small, Margaret Mallory, Hannah Howell, Karen Hawkins and I'm sure I'm forgetting some.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My family 100%.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
I love to draw and I enjoy listening to music and playing games on line that my daughter calls "boring games". Having a severely autistic son I have to say that I enjoy driving around town with him, just burning fuel and cruising.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Usually here at Smashwords, Kindle or from the local library.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Honestly it was so long ago that I can't remember but I can speculate and say it was probably extremely angsty or so sweet it would give you a belly ache.
What is your writing process?
Well it varies, many things inspire me. I usually start visualizing my characters and I build them and the world around them, which in my case it usually is fictional. If I want to do something more real I usually start doing research on the time period and customs of the period and then focus on creating my characters. Research is something I enjoy and do even for my paranormal and sci fi. I look at the resources online, read ideas on how to create what I need from author's blogs etc. Sometimes I flesh out the story but usually I write what my heads produces at the time of writing. I try to finish my first draft before starting to edit the heck out of it but it doesn't always works that way. Pretty messy huh? Can I still call that a process? I will just call it my writing Jambalaya!
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
The first non fiction book I read was about the miracle of life and it gave me a fright so bad it gave me a phobia, I was about four or five years old. The first fictional book that I remember really impacting me was Pete's Dragon. It was a read along book and I played that thing like a million times. I loved the friendship in the book and I always cried at the end. As an adult the fist romance novel I actually read each and every word out of was Twilight by Stephanie Seymour. I read it before the craziness of the movie started and it actually pissed me off how people kept ganging up on Stephanie Seymour. I liked her Twilight series and I didn't skip one page. She captured first love to perfection in my opinion. I guess It's because I am a storyteller first, you write three pages about what your meal looked like and you better believe I'm skipping that s*#@.
How do you approach cover design?
Make it sexy Maggie, make it sexy!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
*The Bible because it's a guide to life and the word of God.
*La Celestina by Fernando de Rojas because its weird and passionate.
*Romeo and Juliet because come on, two young "star-crossed lovers" , should I say more.
*Mother Goose nursery rhymes because it stands the test of time and tuffet is not even a word!
*Twilight by Stephanie Seymour because it taught me I could read a whole book without skipping any parts and that there are people out there who like to read a good romantic story, even without all the added frou-frou fillers.
