Interview with MR Jones

Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a mystery along the lines of Nancy Drew. I was about ten years old and never finished it. That was a problem for me as I am dyslexic and think somewhat tangentally.
What is your writing process?
I get an idea and develop it internally. Then I do research because I want my readers to enjoy the story without the dissonance of incorrect information. I'm pretty much a "pantser" as I write, letting the story tell itself. I do make a few notes as I go along to keep things straight. Without my laptop, I would never have finished a book. I'm a loyal fan of Word because I can cope with the tangled letters I type. Cut and paste is my best friend. When the story is told, it's edit, edit, edit.
How do you approach cover design?
I have been fortunate to work with an excellent designer who takes the description of the story I give her and turns it into a cover that catches the eye. I have a degree in art and that helps when we work to produce a great cover.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in Southeast Texas. Living in the swamps and oil fields along the Texas/Louisiana line gave me a good background in storytelling. The proximity of Houston, NASA, and the Gulf of Mexico gives me fodder for my own stories.
What's the story behind your latest book?
Murder, magic, and mayhem in the oilfields of Southeast Texas. A Dallas-based PI and occasional hit man is hired by two down-on-their-luck oilmen to stop a woman from interfering with their attempts to steal oil from one of the Federal Oil Reserves. He more than meets his match in her and finds himself swept into the world of magic she commands.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I decided to become an indie author in order to have more control over my work.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Being able to tell one of my wild tales in a medium that is available for others to read and enjoy is my greatest joy in writing.
