Interview with Magnus Vågen

Published 2016-10-16.
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in an absolutely average household in Stavanger, Norway. I wasn't a social kid, so I had to learn how to interact with others the hard way when I was a teenager, that definitely influenced my writing. other than that it's not much to tell, everything in my childhood was "average".
When did you first start writing?
I started writing when I was 5. I daydreamed all the time about dragons and tanks, typical for a 5 year old boy, so I wrote some really short and really bad stories about them.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I got tired with seeing men not really understanding women, and I wanted to change that.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I literally had nothing better to do!
How has Smashwords contributed to your success?
Well, I'm not successful yet, but if I become successful I would guess a lot.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
I get to forget whatever's bothering me that day. Writing also stimulates the brain, which has to be good!
What do your fans mean to you?
I have none, so I couldn't tell you even if I wanted to.
What are you working on next?
How to develop healthy roles for both yourself and your partner(s) in a relationship. I'm guessing it's out in another 12 months.
Who are your favorite authors?
Oh good lord, all of them. I love almost every genre under the sun, so I have a favorite author for each. I could spend all day writing a list, but I'm to impatient for that.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
I'm going to starve if i don't get up at some point.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Studying and developing my social skills.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I often decide on a subject I want to be smarter with, and then I'll find a random book in that genre.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, it was a love story between a lonely dragon and a veteran-tank. The dragon was the last of it kind, so it had to find a non-dragon partner, and the tank was there to serve.
What is your writing process?
I write, restructure, write, restructure and correct as many spelling mistakes I can (English isn't my first language).
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
No, and no.
How do you approach cover design?
Well, I throw something random together, and hope people like it. I'm not rich enough to hire someone to do my artwork.
