Interview with Marcy McKay

What's the story behind your latest book?
One afternoon, I was driving to the cemetery of my hometown where my father is buried. It's a place I've visited countless times over the years, but as I drove past the iron gates that autumn day, I heard the voice of a little girl in my head. I went home and started writing down her story, and learned that she was homeless, she was alone, and her mama had disappeared. That's the day I met Copper Daniels, and Pennies from Burger Heaven was born.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Creating imaginary stories that delight me (and, hopefully others).
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I've always LOVED books, but a voice woke me from a dream years ago, and told me to write a book. My life hasn't been the same since.
What do your fans mean to you?
Everything. They encourage me, ask engaging questions, and show me parts of my story I hadn't seen before (because I'm sometimes too close). My fans are the best!
What are you working on next?
I'm working on novel #2 in the Burger Heaven series. It's called Hell Bent and Heaven Bound.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
NOBODY has a perfect life, but my family, friends and writing inspire me to get out of bed every morning. Writing helps in all aspects of my world: creating new stories, journalling to make sense of my struggles, reading for both entertainment and escape.
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
Non-writing time: getting lost in a great book, watching TV with my family (we're soooo excited about the X Files coming back!), my two kids are teenagers - my husband and I love they still enjoy (or maybe tolerate) hanging out with us, doing yoga (the Warrior poses are my fav), having a chai latte with friends, jogging through my neighborhood, etc. Of course. there's are the non-fun stuff: doing the laundry, grocery shopping and cooking, etc.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
Either through a review I like, or a recommendation from a friend.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
No, but I remember the "A" I got in college for a story I wrote from the perspective of a worm in the bottom of a tequila bottle! :)
What is your writing process?
A story grabs hold of me that I can't shake. In the first draft stages, I try to write 1,000 words per day -- 1,000 ugly, awful words that give me the bones of the story. I start refining from there.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
My fourth grade English teacher read us all sorts of stories...the classics: The Wind in the Willows, Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, The Secret Garden...I just loved being transported to different worlds and getting lost in the characters' stories.

"Eleven-year-old Copper Daniels is homeless and alone. She spends her nights sleeping beneath the cemetery’s Warrior Angel statue for protection, and her days battling the mean streets, hell-bent on discovering what happened the night her Mama disappeared. While Copper and her friends find danger at every corner, two horrors are certain: Mama’s really missing and someone’s after Copper, too.
