Interview with Mark Benjamin

Published 2016-04-28.
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
Wow! Talk about a throwback! Wish I could remember the books read in kindergarten (more like read out to me), but early books in my pre-teen years include the Hardy Boys, Famous Five, Secret Seven etc. However, the books that had the biggest impact then (some could say still are) were Animorphs by K. A. Applegate, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis and The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
When did you first start writing?
I started writing fiction at the ripe old age of ten years old.
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
I do. I was ten and it was about superheroes who wanted to save the world from imminent destruction! I still have it as it was done in an exercise book, complete with a friend of mine who did the cover art and another who was my editor. Times were good I tell you!
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
That's another tough one to answer. The greatest joy of writing for me is when a new story line, arc or idea just seems to pop out of nowhere when I'm stuck in a particular section or scene. It ends up making the books that much better in my humble opinion.
This is closely followed by completing the book of course.
Describe your desk
Cluttered. Though I rightly assume I slightly have OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder) my desk resembles my notes and brain...organised chaos!
What do you read for pleasure?
I quite literary read anything. From business books to autobiographies, graphic novels to self-help books, philosophy to poetry, and all kinds of fiction. Like my music tastes, I am quite eclectic, believing that each genre has something for me.
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife, Lucy, and our beautiful baby daughter, Leia.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I use my phone apps which enable me to read all sorts of ebooks.
What do your fans mean to you?
The fans mean more than a lot to me. Without them I would simply be writing for myself. With them however, we get to interact and hear how my characters have affected them and who they love (or hate), which always puts a song in my heart and a spring in my step. You get it now? That's how much they mean to me. I do dances just thinking of them.
