Interview with Mark Giglio

Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
I grew up in upstate New York (Troy) and Lemon Grove, southern Cal. I attended Catholic grade school until we moved to Lemon Grove. Growing up Catholic with all of the ritual and symbolism has made its way into my writing.
When did you first start writing?
I wrote my first short story, ( sci fi) when I was in the fifth grade.
Describe your desk
Small, plain and simple with one laptop, one dictionary and a desk lamp. I'm tucked in a nook between the fireplace and the wall that makes a nifty little cave.
What is your writing process?
I have an idea where I want my characters to end up. I find it is better for me anyway, not to force the actual writing. I have to remind myself that the scene will work out or the characters will eventually get to where they have to go and all will be sorted out in the editing. I also realize what I write down are only ideas and can be changed or tossed. Sometimes a clever line might have to go to the wayside, but so what, we all have a plethora of ideas that haven't been used yet. Be clear and never write down to your readers.
What's the story behind your latest book?
I've enjoyed a lifetime interest and love of history, art, the humanities, anthropology, alchemy, world religions, and spirituality. By trade I am a cabinet and furniture maker. I decided to embody all of my interest in pieces of art furniture called the Alchemist Series. You can see the Alchemist Series and read about the novel 'Alchemist Gift' at Alchemistgift.com. I wrote a screen play that featured one of the pieces of furniture, 'The Alchemist Cabinet'. The screen play was a fun exercise but the characters demanded to be given more depth and a bigger world to live in, so I expanded the screen play into the novel 'Alchemist Gift'.
What is the greatest joy of writing for you?
Hearing from a reader that a certain part of the story made them emotionally involved with the character or the circumstance.
What are you working on next?
The second book in the trilogy is 'Curious Journey'. 'Curious Journey' will have some familiar characters and a host of new ones. This book looks at renaissance philosophy concerning the existence and the ability to travel between different metaphysical planes of reality, including the spirit world. 'Curious Journey' is a spiritual quest for the character Conte Emilio d'Benevita. I hope to have 'Curious Journey' finished and out by summer of 2015. I am also formulating the third book in the series that answers questions from the first two novels. You can read excerpts from 'Curious Journey" on wattpad.com.
What motivated you to become an indie author?
I really don't have the time. I am no longer a twenty something with a life time ahead of me to wait on someone else to decide my fate. I an not inclined to be bandied about and hopefully get on the publishing house carousel and maybe have the right editor see the book just at the right moment and then he or she might consider it for publication. If a book is well written and insightful, people will find it. I believe there are enough ways to reach the public here and in other English speaking countries that are outside of the traditional practices of the brick and mortar publishing houses.
