Interview with MB Munroe

Who are your favorite authors?
It's hard, but if I had to choose TWO it would be James Baldwin and Siri Hustvedt
What inspires you to get out of bed each day?
My wife, Aino!
When you're not writing, how do you spend your time?
At work, or enjoying a nice red with a plate of food in my fave restaurant with friends or my wife.
How do you discover the ebooks you read?
I read a lot of reviews for publisher led titles, for more hidden self published gems, I just trawl around the web and download what I fancy..
Do you remember the first story you ever wrote?
Yes, I was around 7 years old, a UFO 'X Files' type yarn...wish I kept it!!
What is your writing process?
I come up with the idea in the most oddest places, shopping, driving or watching mindless soaps on TV. Once I have the idea, I try and flesh out the characters, make them real in my mind. Then I map out the basic story. Months may have passed before I even attempt to write. If the first three chapters aren't working, I start from scratch, sometimes even killing my darlings....
Do you remember the first story you ever read, and the impact it had on you?
I read Mice and Men when I was very young, about 10 and it really had a huge impact. Invisible Man was another book I read, around 12, both of them made me want to be writer.
How do you approach cover design?
Well my first book, 'The Last Black Man' was designed by Amazon, so I've only dabbled in it for my free book here on Smashwords..It's very important and best left to the pro's!!
What are your five favorite books, and why?
Another Country - No other book captures the boho atmosphere of any big city like that book - The sex, the sweat, artists and musicians and hipsters, it's timeless.

What I loved - The book has such depth to the characters and is so well written, I can't help but re-read it every couple of years.

Secret History - It really captures the feeling of going away to university and trying to fit in, the murder is a side story really.

Invisible Man - A classic, it taught me that one can be writer and black.

The plot against America - I'm a big fan of Roth and this is one of his best. Parts of that book had my breath held..
What do you read for pleasure?
See last question.
What is your e-reading device of choice?
I just read on my tablet via the Kindle App and the various other ones.
What book marketing techniques have been most effective for you?
I tell you when I figure that one out...
Describe your desk
I have no desk, I write laying down on sofa onto a laptop
Where did you grow up, and how did this influence your writing?
London and it's in all my writing. It's a great place to grow as you see the whole world outside your doorstep
When did you first start writing?
As soon as I knew how to write.
